Behind the Scenes With Inez & Vinoodh

In the December issue of W, Alex White directed an all-Armani shoot.

In lieu of models, Bookings Editor Rena Lazaros (who narrates this video) cast a variety of artists, hence the title, Armani: United Artists. She gathered dancers, singers, performers and actors to sit for Inez and Vinoodh wearing Armani, Prive and A/X.

The cast includes Hugh Dancy, Susie Bick, Sophie Auster and Peter Sarsgaard, and as usual, a behind the scenes peek - especially one that lets you watch Inez & Vinoodh work - is almost better than the end product.

Intern for Camilla!

cate blanchett w magazine cover.jpgCamilla Nickerson, W’s Senior Contributing Fashion Editor, needs an intern to start as soon as possible, so he/she is prepped by January 4th, when the real work begins and questions like “What’s a sit sheet?” are no longer cute.

Experience in fashion is a must - especially since Camilla frequently works with the likes of Mario Sorrenti, Patrick Demarchelier, Juergen Teller, etc - and the intern must have “LOTS” of time available to dedicate.

E-mail your resume to Stephanie.sollers[at]gmail.com.

Good luck!

Lively Does Indeed Land W Cover

blake lively pulling a claire danes for w magazine.jpgRumors of Blake Lively being in either W or Vogue have been at least half confirmed with Blake’s four page interview on W’s site.

Read it to hear about how she eats, how she’s blessed, how she doesn’t really like to go out and considers herself a little “geeky,” and to see if you can stomach yet another starlet interview that launches with a beautiful girl “digging” into a vegetable dish.

So will she be in Vogue soon, too? Only time will tell, but until then, we’re hoping W can fit in an interview with our vote for the hottest Gossip girl - though we think we might prefer an interview with Blair..

Not Safe for America, but Totally Safe for Fashion

zac and miri make a porno.jpgHave you seen the posters for Zac and Miri Make a Porno?

They have little stick figures and say something like, “Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks made a movie so steamy/outrageous/titillating that this is all we can show you.”

We thought it was cute. But then we read that the original posters were just too scandalous for America, which is why they had to scratch the real life pictures and go with stick figures.

You can see the original at left, and we’d hardly call it “titillating”. Especially not compared to the gigantic Calvin Klein ad featuring a naked, writhing Eva Mendes outside our office, or the pages of men wearing Dolce & Gabbana skivvies in every magazine, or even the pictures of Angelina Jolie in this month’s W.

What would’ve happened if, when Tom Ford’s toe-sucking fragrance ads got banned, he broke out a sharpie and drew a stick figure’s toe in another stick figure’s mouth?

Um, hope you’ve already had lunch.

Intern for W!

America Ferrara W Are you a college student who wants to be a stylist? Can you handle working for some of the biggest names in fashion?

Then pay attention.

W Magazine needs full time and part time interns for Fall ‘08. You should be prepared to work 2-5 days a week, for 8 - 12 hours a day. You should be able to justify working for free to Conde Nast by either being a real college student with a lot of free time, or a fake college student with a plausible explanation for why you have a semester off.

You will be working in the W fashion closet, calling in clothes, helping to pack for fashion shoots, and occasionally assisting on sets. You will be really bored and really stressed unless the only thing you have ever wanted to do is work at a fashion magazine.

If you can handle that, email Garrett_Munce@condenast.com with a short explanation of why you will work until you collapse for nothing, and your Fall ‘08 schedule.

People Are Talking

Ryan McGinley Caves to Carine

ryan mcginley.jpgIn 2003, hipster artist extraordinare Ryan McGinley once told The Advocate that he wasn’t interested in fashion editorial work:

“It may be fine for someone else, but I’m just not interested in taking photographs of other people’s clothes. My photos are about something that’s really personal to me and the people that are involved in my life.”

He’s since gone on to shoot one of our favorite Kate Moss spreads ever, and create a video project for Puma.

Now we hear he’s recruiting models around town for two major photo shoots - POP and French Vogue - both of which should be amazing. And though yes, the models in his shoot are often mostly naked, there’s at least some fashion on display. And frankly, we love that he changed his mind since his photography tends to make the prettiest clothes even prettier.

So until those European shoots debut, you can still catch his very naked, very sunny “I Know Where the Summer Goes” exhibit at the Team Gallery in NYC.

Magazines

The April issue of W Magazine features a 60 page photo essay on New Orleans shot by Bruce Weber.

We’re dying to see the whole spread - but we’ll have to make do with this adorable video of Karen Elson swaying to Louisiana jazz in a very vintage living room.

The video’s called “Karen’s Boogie”; in it, she gracefully dances in the highest, most beautiful heels like only a supermodel can.

If we could only look this cool dancing around our apartment.

W Wants to Put You in the Closet!

w_cover.jpg Attention potential interns:

W Magazine needs some help in their accessories department.

The job is purely with the handbags, shoes, and jewelry (no writing) and is unpaid. You need to be available 2-4 days a week, you need to have prior experience at a magazine, and you need to be chic (duh). But most of all, you need to be incredibly organized, respectful, and willing to follow directions.

If you want the job email William_Kahn@condenast.com with a brief (seriously!) description of how you can make life in the W fashion department easier for the editors.

Also, you might get to see Kate Moss - the last time we were in the W offices, we did!

Heads Up: Bags!

W bags.jpgLike free designer handbags? How about four of them?

W Magazine is about to unveil their Spring Bag Sweepstakes.

What’s up for grabs? The Chloe, Dior, Jimmy Choo and Marc Jacobs bags at left.

Head over to their site at noon, when the contest officially begins. All you have to do is fill out your info and sit pretty until March 31 when the winner is announced.

Only one person can win all four bags, so we suggest putting in your name as many times as you can type it without chipping away all your Blue Satin.

Bonne chance! (you’ll need it)…

Big Bags - A Soliloquy

handbag.jpgEveryone - mainly the New York Times followed by the Wall Street Journal’s usual lag - is worried about the effects of big bags on women’s backs and shoulders. Yes, this could be a problem. But I’m kind of worried about the women who carry small bags - where do they put all their stuff?

I’ve carried a big bag around for as long as I can remember (or at least as long as I haven’t been carrying my red Jansport), and I never thought its size was a trend so much as a necessity.

It currently holds my wallet, two books, my Moleskine calendar, two Moleskine notebooks (one big and one small), W, orange juice, an apple, endless pens and Lipsmackers, my new pink lipstick, a water bottle, some gold bangles, a hat, a sweater, the black tights I just bought, my iphone, my ipod, my keys, my Kiehl’s cucumber lotion, and a lifetime supply of bobby pins. These are all things that I need everyday when I leave my apartment early in the morning and don’t return until bed time.

The only girl I know who actually carries a small bag on a daily basis is Natalie. She’s 1/4 my size and so is her bag.

I asked her where she puts all her stuff and she said, “In college, I carried the most ridiculously huge Puma bag everywhere - by the time I graduated I had serious back problems - so now I carry my little leather bag from a market in Florence, and I just hold my notebook in my hand. If I have to bring more stuff to work I’ll bring it in a shopping bag.”

So that’s why women carry shopping bags with their lunch and their shoes and their books? Because they carry small bags?

That sounds backwards - the only way I’ll abandon my duffel sized handbags is if I don’t have anywhere to go for the day, or if I ever stop reading/using lotion/writing/drink juice/you get the point.

How big is your bag? Or, how many bags do you carry?

The Line Between Retro and Costume

seventiesflair.jpgJanuary’s W may center around a cold interview with Hilary Swank, but it also boasts a very warm, very striking 1970’s inspired editorial.

We read it on our flight back to New York from California, and we almost screamed for the pilot to turn the plane around so we could dress like this every single day. The clothes, the hair, the bags, the sunshine!

We’ve always been the first and most enthusiastic to embrace retro glamour - we’re the only one in the office obsessed with Dita Von Teese and we were Bettie Page for Halloween to everyone’s confusion - but when it comes to actually getting dressed in the morning, we acknowledge the possibility of going too far.

We’re just not sure where the line is - A blousy silk top with flares and wedges might be a costume to some, but for us it’s just toeing the line between Spring ‘73 and Spring ‘08. Is the addition of a denim vest too much? What about a floral headscarf?

It’s standard to mix and match something vintage with something modern, but sometimes we have fun creating an entirely retro look. We just wish people wouldn’t ask us if it’s Halloween when we do.

Since the look of the 1970’s has always been our favorite, we’re loving the return of wedges and can’t wait to see the Halston revival.

Is there an era of clothing that designers have not yet revived that you emulate? Or do you stay away from retro, afraid that you might look, well, tired?

Quote of the Day

“While some guests shopped (like Elton John, who purchased two bags before his 45-minute set), others played it cool. “I don’t need to buy anything - they give it to me,” boasted Monica Bellucci.” - from W Magazine’s story about Dior’s Paris blowout.
