Dame Viv On Luella

yasmin at viv.jpgLast night was the second time this week we found ourselves in the car park at Selfridges.

On Sunday, Yasmin LeBon hosted the Really, Really Great Garage sale to raise money for Mothers4Children and last night, Vivienne Westwood showed her Anglomania collection to everyone from Tracey Emin, Rosemary Ferguson and Little Boots to Julia Restoin Roitfeld, Yasmin Mills and Lady Victoria Hervey. Daisy Lowe stomped down the runway as she’s prone to doing in an eye-popping, colorful Masaai warrior look - the collection’s recurrent theme.

The whole Survivor-esque thing felt quite timely, given that Londoners are still reeling from the Luella news, but Viv was not discouraged, “It’s a bit of a cull, innit? May be a good thing, she may just come out bigger and better. Tell an English bird she can’t do and she will come out stronger - trust me!”

Matthew Blows It

matthew williamson ss10.jpgYou know a show’s bad when you can’t wait for it to be over, especially when it’s only seven minutes long.

Unfortunately, that’s the way Matthew Williamson went yesterday. It wasn’t all his fault though. The ridiculous heat - sweat poured off front row faces including Olivia Palermo, Cecilia Dean, Twiggy, Yasmin LeBon, Leigh Lezark, Aliona Doletskaya, Michael Roberts and Jodie Harsh - was hard to stomach. Kind of like Williamson’s attempts at tailoring.

So far, he’s built a pretty solid business over the past few years with his haute gypsy, running off to Ibiza look. It includes lots of long flowy dresses, mirrors, colour and hippie dippy frocks often without shape and still eye-poppingly expensive.

His marketing’s genius, Sienna Miller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Plum Sykes, Jade Jagger et al, are his best friends, campaign stars and constant photo companions so he was, essentially selling a dream lifestyle, rather than clothes, which is quite easy to buy into.

But this year, Mr. Williamson decided to tailor which was, we agree, long overdue. And yet it didn’t work. You can’t just add a structured waist and a cupola sleeve without changing everything else that needed changing, i.e. Ibiza happy prints and weird houndstooth which is what came down the runway.

In fact, the final piece, a silk maxi dress, had beauty pageant written all over it, which is probably the worse thing you could say about a collection.

Quote of the Day

“I find this frightening and difficult. I’m going to be judged and it is scary. I’m proud of it, and if no one likes it, well, I like it.” —Yasmin LeBon on her new clothing line for Arcadia’s Wallis in The Guardian.

Graeme Black — Great Scot!

graeme black scott award.jpgIt amazes us that Scottish designer Graeme Black isn’t more widely known.

After all, he was senior designer at Armani for years (not to mention the great Giorgio’s boyfriend for much of that time), and before that Creative Director of Ferragamo. He launched his luxe, very tailored, eponymous label a few years ago.

Victoria Beckham’s a major fan; her own line was equal parts inspired by Black as Mouret. His fiercely loyal following also includes Arab princesses, political wives, English (celeb) royalty including Elle MacPherson and Yasmin LeBon, whose daughter walked Graeme’s AW09 runway and so on.

The designer’s been more quietly successful stateside, his new Saks concession is ka-chinging along and he’ll be part of the new ninth floor in September. In London, he’s launching an entirely new retail concept - think a more luxe Colette - this fall.

And why are we talking about him now? Because the Scottish Fashion Awards were kind of irrelevant until Scotland started producing the likes of Alexander McQueen, Louise Gray, Christopher Kane etc. and since Jonathan Saunders was more than expected to take home designer of the year, everyone’s eye has turned toward Black after scooping the award this weekend.

So for now, Black gets to be the Great Scot.

London Model Watch

amber le bon.jpgWe produce models as fast as we can, given the fact that you guys steal them away within months.`

We’ve recently lost Agyness, Daisy, Alexa and Karen, so thank goodness our model machine keeps churning out new faces.

Meet Amber Le Bon, daughter of Yasmin and Duran Duran’s Simon LeBon. The combination of her mum’s legs and her dad’s rock star appeal is thoroughly British. And she’s still too young to leave us. It’s no wonder she’s just signed contracts with high street store River Island and Myla, the lingerie brand whose recent ads starred your Lydia Hearst.

Thanks in no small part to her mum’s enviable Alaia collection, she stood out at last night’s Hogan party, even while surrounded by the likes of Beth Ditto, Giles Deacon, Savannah Miller, Lily Cole and Katie Grand.

I Don’t Care What My Teachers Say, I’m Gonna Be A Supermodel

So, it’s officially 90’s flashback day, and we couldn’t be more excited. And what could be greater than supers backstage?

Here, Yasmin Lebon (yes like Simon from Duran Duran) is a new mommy, Naomi hates wearing clothes, and everyone is wearing swimsuits that would make Rosa Cha blush.

Did we mention this is from House of Style? Oh yeah, and Cindy Crawford is hosting!

Now if only Daria would interview Stam and Gemma at Marc, our lives would be complete.
