There was internet on my bus back from Boston last night, which led to loads YouTubing in place of much needed sleep.
I found this - a really well made video of Erin Wasson circa 2008 working on Alex Wang’s AW08 collection, dressing models, smoking cigarettes, talking about AMFAR and explaining her decision to document everything on video, “I have a really shitty short term memory and when I’m old with Alzheimer’s I want to be able to like remember how dope and youthful I was.”
We like Betsey Johnson now, but we loved Betsey Johnson fifteen years ago, which is why we spent last night watching these vintage videos instead of True Blood.
Her team’s uploaded an insane archive, dating back to 1978 when Betsy debuted her namesake label and sent gyrating models down the runway in neon satin dresses with major side ponytails and shoulders I’ll call Balmain even though I’m aware they weren’t that back then.
You can catch Steven Tyler and Marc Jacobs walking her runway, as well as Pat Field, Bjork and of course, the famous ending cartwheel.
There are ten videos posted so far through the eighties and into the early nineties, and they’ll be adding more on a daily basis on Youtube, their Facebook page and via Twitter.
Apparently do it yourself or how to beauty videos are all the rage on YouTube and since Elle has an actual stable of beauty editors in house and an endless supply of experts on call they figured they’d tap into that market.
Emily Dougherty, Elle’s beauty and fitness director, told WWD, “We want to incorporate as many parts of the Elle brand as possible on the Web.”
So VideoStar - that’s what they’re calling it - will feature both amateur and professional makeup artists doing instructional videos for online viewers with loads of Cover Girl, probably, since they’ve signed on to sponsor for a year.
Great, between this and Modelinia’s mini-movies we’ll probably never get any work done again.
Well, sort of. The short film helps promote the work of designer Mads Nørgaard, and includes Freja walking around like she’s in a music video until she runs into Cat and they play sexy eyes at each other for about a minute.
The second, and much more official, installation can be found here.
Guess we’ll have to wait and see if the girls get a happy ending.
Don’t ask us how, but Stockholm-based label Acne has been experimenting with video, which has resulted in the work at left: Boys bouncing on a trampoline. In their undies.
Acne says it’s “creative” and a “film installation” by young British film maker Richard Brandon Cox “inspired by” the Spring/Summer 09 underwear collection.
We say: Does this remind anyone else of that horrible show from years ago on Comedy Central, The Man Show, which always ended with a series of girls jumping on trampolines? (Except much better now, for the obvious reasons.)
There are some online rumblings about the TMZ video, at left.
In it, Kanye claims to be wearing Louis Vuitton sneakers, and for whatever reason, viewers have decided that these are the Louis Vuitton shoes Kanye is supposed to have collaborated on some months ago (he does appear to say something like “these aren’t coming out til June” while walking away from the creepy paparazzo, but we don’t hear him clearly say that they’re the exact shoes he designed… just saying.)
Either way, it’s fun that he answers “clothes” when asked what his plans for 2009 are. Though if those all-white sneakers really are the fruits of his first design efforts, well, we hope he does land a good internship soon.
We missed Kate on British Style Genius the other night, but Fashionologie’s made sure to remind us that Kate sounds so incredibly next-door, when we imagine her sounding more like Queen of the Nile.
So in the spirit of all thing’s Kate, please do enjoy this video of her being shot (and winking, smiling, possibly snort-laughing, and pointing) and wonder to yourself, do I sound how I look?
We’re pretty sure everybody and their editor saw the clips of the Valentino pugs yesterday -
But have you seen the two adorable clips made live just yesterday?
In one, Valentino and co. remember the past in true Italian style.
In the other, Valentino answers the question Freud put forth - “What do women want?” (But his answer, well…)
The Acolyte Films people still say they’re not sure when Valentino: The Last Emperor finally hits normal screens, but if you happen to be at the opening of the Hamptons Film Festival on October 15th, then you’re in luck.
Here’s some food for thought in light of the ongoing outrage over models’ ages -
Do you remember those Calvin Klein ads from the early 90’s? Yeah? Remember how there was something a little creepy about them, like if Dov Charney had a camcorder set up in his basement?
Well, check out these CK clips (which were eventually banned for being “too offensive”), including a slightly squeaky-voiced Bijou Phillips.
That rumor we spread about Mark Fast doing a line for Topshop? It's true. And it's in last week's Sunday Telegraph magazine which means it was true before we even said anything and we've had it in our lap since... Read More
Meet Blue Logan, if you haven't already. A couple of years ago a friend dragged the soft-spoken Brit to a show at London Fashion Week, Aquascutum he thinks, and he started to draw the models as they walked down the... Read More
