Fashion Is Fun

Head Games

118629.jpgHeads are so hot right now. This summer, it started with the resurgence of the hat. Over the past few years, we’ve heard people asking, “Why doesn’t anyone wear hats anymore…like men in the fifties…like Humphrey Bogart? It’s so classy!”

Enter Mad Men, to show that yes, those hats were damn classy. Sometimes people just need a little boost to start wearing a new (or new/old) trend. Though currently the look is less business and more casual - it’s not just for company presidents and Hollywood stars.

Streetwalker: West Side Sunshine

katy westside streetwalker.jpgKaty, 25, works for Blue State Digital

Got Her: Strolling the West Side Highway Sunday morning.

Stalked Her: I feel stupid for not taking a picture (she might’ve had coffee, but I hadn’t quite yet), but her dress had a long gold zipper falling down the back.

Shot Her: Because when we got up close we saw her awesome pink ombre vintage sunglasses. Also, we’ve seen a lot of hats this summer and this one’s in the top five.

She Said: “I needed a way to turn last night’s dress into an acceptable this morning’s outfit, so I borrowed my friend’s hat - a girl! - and threw on the simplest sandals I had.”

We Say: Simple maybe, but still kind of perfect.

Ed. note: She spent the night at her friend’s house, was in town from DC visiting various friends. Was supposed to make that clearer, clearly!

Streetwalker: They Call Me Mellow Yellow

streetwalker 010.jpg

Whitney, 21, intern

Got Her: Waiting for her bus on Bedford Ave.

Stalked Her: Because her high-waisted yellow linen skirt was begging to be photographed.

Shot Her: Because we love a girl in a hat. We especially love a girl who can pull off a hat and bright yellow skirt at the same time. And did you see those shoes? She looks like the epitome of casual on-the-go chic.

She Said: “I love mixing old and new pieces and mixing different textures. I really like exaggerated proportions right now”

We Say: Keep on mixing and matching the brights and the caps!

Happy Belated Birthday! Ed, we’re so sorry we missed your party because we’re sure that invite just got lost in the mail. Guess we’ll catch you on your 23rd. {People}

Hat Day: We went to a wedding this weekend where a lovely girl totally rocked one of the black Marc Jacobs hats. We’re still debating whether or not we’d be able to pull it off. Perhaps this will help us decide. {WhoWhatWear}

Would You Wear

Would you Wear a Visor?

00120m[1].jpgYour mom probably wore one when she played tennis. Or the kid that got made fun of during summer camp. And Eminem was pretty into wearing one backwards in 2001.

That’s right, the visor. There are two basic versions: the sporty, and the beachy.

We’ve seen the sporty one cropping up ironically on your basic hipster. Michael Kors had the beachy sort all over his Spring 09 runway. Now we’re even seeing avant-garde versions.

We’re definitely steering clear of the sporty because irony usually fades after a few weeks and then it’s just plain ugly. As for the beach, we thought Lara wore a nice one for Michael Kors, and there’s a version at Neiman Marcus that we’d even consider calling elegant. But these two mostly just look like hats so…why not just wear a hat?

Is there an appeal to the visor that we’re completely missing?

The Bow Hat and Madonna Have Something in Common

aretha franklin and her bow hat from inauguration.jpgIf you’ve been in front of a computer over the last 20 hours or so, then you probably know that everybody under the sun wants to know where in the world Aretha Franklin found that huge bow hat she wore to sing “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” at the Presidential Inauguration.

So here’s the scoop, via WWD: The hat’s from Detroit-based milliner Luke Song, and retails for $179.

Luke Song wholesales in New York, California, “throughout the South” and online under the label Mr. Song Millinery.

We especially love how on-trend Aretha was with that massive hat, and yet totally as she’s always been (as Britt put it: “I can’t wait to be old and wear crazy hats”) - So will everyone else play catch up? We’ll see.

Killer Clowns from Cyberspace

random topshop hat.jpgAs we all know, even people you love can make mistakes. And unfortunately this is one of those situations. We tried to be understanding. We tried to be compassionate. But seriously, Topshop, what were you thinking with this hat?

Is it for an as-of-yet-unannounced Halloween line? Or perhaps some sort of joke we don’t understand. You, yourself, even describe it as a “clown hat;” but frankly, Topshop, we aren’t laughing. We don’t appreciate your attempt at haute clown apparel because lets face it - this looks like a pointy white felt cap with pom-poms slapped on the side. We can’t imagine anyone, clown or not, who would want to spend $30 on this.

But even this inexplicable misstep couldn’t dissuade our love for you, Topshop, so we forgive you. And we’re still beyond excited for you to open your doors in New York this October, just do us a favor and don’t sell your clown hats there.

Mad Hatter

Victor Osbourne Minsk Hat.jpgNow that it’s officially arctic outside, we’re finally breaking down and buying a hat.

But we know from years’ experience that most hats either slip off or get blown off, which means we’ll have to go for something substantial.

Enter the Minsk Hat, available at Oak NYC, from FIT grad Victor Osbourne.

It’ll stay on, cover our ears, and, most importantly, match with everything since it doesn’t really match with anything (and isn’t that the best way to accessorize?)

It’s also a cute, pared down alternative to the all-out trapper hat, so you don’t need to gather all your courage before stepping out into the cold.

Would You Wear

Would You Wear A Beret?

Versace beret.jpgWe’ve been seeing berets on the street a lot lately, and we have to say, we’re torn.

Some people think a beret is pure costume, no matter how cute the girl sporting it, and others see a French style of hat appropriate at any time.

We kind of think the question of whether or not to wear a beret depends on the wearer herself.

While intern Britt actually looks cool and kind of urbane in hers, we know that if we ever tried it, we’d look like Chris from Project Runway had picked out our outfit that morning - or that we were going to a children’s book convention, dressed as Madeline.

Of course, the outfit holding it up depends on the way the hat is interpreted, too. We wouldn’t suggest wearing one with a jumper and knee socks, but we would suggest jeans tucked into boots with a loose sweater and coat.

Would you wear a beret? Or is this one accessory better relegated to Halloween parties?

Lou Doillon Likes the Top

lou.jpg We’re a little worried by this video of Lou Doillion , even though she comes across as incredibly intelligent, very cool, and extremely deliberate in her style.

The scary part is the top hat, and the fact that she claims “The Artful Doger is my ultimate style icon and I always strive to look like that… the blazer I’m wearing can also perfectly fit my six-year-old son… I find nothing more erotic than when a woman bears her wrists.”

The film was made to promote Lou’s new line with Lee Cooper denim, which (of course) isn’t available in America yet.

Of course, those top hats are at most costume stores - and so if you’re thinking of going for the magician look that Lou’s got happening, it shouldn’t be too hard.

We’re bringing it up as a classic example of what a “style icon” can pull off, that the rest of us really can’t. Much like Kate Moss in Ugg boots and underwear, sometimes the truly, truly, truly outrageous flairs of the rich, famous, and beautiful are a one-shot deal.

Of course, with Phantasmagoria and two other Alice in Wonderland movies debuting soon, maybe this is just the beginning of a new hat trick (though our hopes say no).
