Five Things I Learned From DvF

dvftvu.jpgThanks to the magic of television, I’ve seen Rachel Zoe die after Diane von Furstenberg told her “she’d become the woman she’d always wanted to be,” and watched Whitney Port stare blankly as the fashion icon dished out invaluable career and relationship advice. Now, thanks to Teen Vogue’s Fashion University, I’ve heard DVF for myself.

As the program’s keynote speaker, Diane walked out to so many flashbulbs that she had to tell her overly-eager audience to cut it out and listen. Here are some highlights of her lively, inspirational speech.

1. She takes pride in understanding women. Diane believes that clothes should be like close friends: “When you’re standing in front of the closet in the morning, and you feel like shit, you should go for the reliable one that makes you feel good.”

2. She always has a camera with her. Her close-ups of leaves, bark, or anything else she finds beautiful in nature can end up a pattern in one of her collections.

The Eyes Have it at Hogan

hogan-eyewear4.jpgIf the Olsens ever tire of wearing their own new sunglasses, we’re pretty sure they will love the ones soon to be available from Hogan, who are licensing eyewear for the first time.

Many of the women’s styles are oversized and retro and ever-so celebrity-friendly. The men’s put yet another spin on the aviator, which we’re not sure the world needs, but oh well.

I actually am surprised that Hogan hasn’t done glasses before now. They are all about the accessories after all. The line will range from $285-$375 and you can start getting your hands on them starting Monday.

Streetwalker: West Side Sunshine

katy westside streetwalker.jpgKaty, 25, works for Blue State Digital

Got Her: Strolling the West Side Highway Sunday morning.

Stalked Her: I feel stupid for not taking a picture (she might’ve had coffee, but I hadn’t quite yet), but her dress had a long gold zipper falling down the back.

Shot Her: Because when we got up close we saw her awesome pink ombre vintage sunglasses. Also, we’ve seen a lot of hats this summer and this one’s in the top five.

She Said: “I needed a way to turn last night’s dress into an acceptable this morning’s outfit, so I borrowed my friend’s hat - a girl! - and threw on the simplest sandals I had.”

We Say: Simple maybe, but still kind of perfect.

Ed. note: She spent the night at her friend’s house, was in town from DC visiting various friends. Was supposed to make that clearer, clearly!

On Loan

pucci_sunglasses.jpgWe are really bad at packing for trips. We consistently overpack but still manage to leave vital items at home, usually sitting on our dresser or kitchen counter. This has happened with our sunglasses more times than we can remember.

Which is why we think the Pucci sunglasses loaner program at the Montage Beverly Hills is just what we’ve always needed.

We would rather not buy a fancy new pair of shades when we’ve got a perfectly good pair at home. So borrowing a designer pair from the hotel so that we can sit by the pool all weekend without squinting is a fabulous idea. And we hope it catches on at hotels all over the place. And if you fall madly in love with them, there are new pairs available for purchase.

Now, can someone start a shoe lending program? Because we undoubtedly always bring the wrong pair.

Is The New

Is the New: Clubmasters and Wayfarers

ray ban clubmasters.jpgThe next logical step from Ray-Ban, via WWD this morning:

Following the success of the Wayfarers revival (so successful we’re sick of them), Ray-Ban’s reintroducing another oldie/goodie from their archive, the Clubmasters, from the golden year of 1986, already recently spotted on the likes of Agyness and Rachel Bilson.

The style will get six new bright colors added to its repertoire (in addition to classic black and tortoise), launching at a small concert at the Bowery Ballroom on December 9th.

Each pair will retail for $129. But if you can’t wait (and feel like this season’s sales need to be respected), you could throw a pair onto your Amazon holiday order for $99 - that is, of course, if you won’t want to flick them off people’s faces by New Year’s.

Through Artist-Doodled Wayfarers

chris mendoza drew on these wayfarers.jpgWhile most people will either sleep in or try to get a good deal on a family supply of scarves this Friday, here’s something fun you could do instead:

Stop by the Sunglass Hut (between 1pm and 5pm) in Soho to watch artist Chris Mendoza hand-paint 100 pair of Wayfarers with graffiti-ish illustrations for customers to either buy on the spot, or to be sold on SunglassHut.com starting December 3rd.

The specs will go for $250 a pop, with 25% of the proceeds going to Gift of Sight.

That is, of course, if you haven’t tired completely of seeing them on the face of every person under 30 (Or, you know, that part about “$250.”)

Would You Wear

Would You Wear: John Lennon Glasses

6p52m14.jpgReally, we should have seen this coming. I mean, MK was wearing them eight months ago. But now we’ve seen them at Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren, not to mention on Aggy - so we think it’s official: small, round sunglasses are the new lens shape.

For the past few years now, sunglasses have been going the course of bags - the bigger and blingier, the better. So it’s kind of refreshing to see people choosing a shade shape not with the same standards as when shopping at Costco.

The shape, that’s both retro (ex: John Lennon) and Blade Runner (ex: Ralph Lauren Spring 09) can add a little bit of “Oh, hello, those are different” to pretty much anything, which is probably why they’re coming back. And they let people actually see your face, which could be a good thing, unless you count on big glasses to get you to and from Starbucks without anyone knowing you’re exhausted / hung over / not wearing mascara.

On the other hand, when MK wore them, our reaction was mixed, so we can only imagine the implications for a mere civilian. Like, don’t they just kind of make you look like Sean Lennon (or even Elton John)?

Quote of the Day

“That’s progress for you: last year, we had the very silly-looking white sunglasses craze. This year, we have the completely stupid school of Bob the Builder, multicoloured, very plastic look. Which means that if spending half the morning co-ordinating your hair extensions with your vast collection of Birkins isn’t enough to fulfil you creatively as an artist, then you can at least bolt on another hour or two while you decide whether to match or clash your specs with your toenails.” - Lisa Armstrong, on brightly colored sunglasses, in the London Times.

Imagine Me and Blue

Fashionista Blue Sunglasses A few weeks ago, Sienna Miller was photographed wearing blue cheapo sunglasses in Heathrow Airport.

ELLE Magazine loved it;
we did too.

Then FabSugar found Paris Hilton, also wearing bright blue shades. Even though she is dating the darling Benji Madden, we still don’t approve of Ms. Hilton’s personal style - but still, more blue shades.

The whole thing made us wonder where else they might go, and this morning, we found out:

Onto hipster boys.

The good news: These things cost like $3 on St. Mark’s Place or at Venice Beach or even CVS.

The bad news: Well, you can just fill in the blank with that one.

Shopping

Tom Ford Goes to Costco

Tom Ford Sunglasses Costco recently came under fire when the Prada and Kate Spade bags in their stores were called faux by fashion insiders.

Now the mega chain is adding something else from the style set for mass consumption:

Tom Ford sunglasses.

Readers in the Midwest have spotted the sexy shades, as modeled by Carine Roitfeld, her daughter Julia, and Sienna Miller, in Costco stores.

The shades usually retail for about $400, but have been knocked down to the $150 range at the mega store.

We wonder if they’re in the mini hot dog aisle, or closer to the giant cans of Twizzlers.

Mark Ronson Still Likes Wayfarers. Do You?

wayfarer.JPG Confession: we adore Mark Ronson, almost as much as his sister Charlotte.

So when his record label emailed us and said, “Want to give away a pair of Ray Bans in honor of Mark’s new album?” we were like, “Okay, sure.”

We realize this raises a chasm in the depth of some of your souls.

After all, Wayfarers are as polarizing as high waisted jeans, Henry Holland tees, and ankle boots.

And yet, we realize that some of you are still very into Wayfarers, and in fact, some of you would like nothing more than to wear Wayfarers with Mark Ronson while smoking an herbal cigarette somewhere in the back alley of the Lower East Side.

For you, we give you this challenge:

Send us a Streetwalker of yourself or your best friend (tips@fashionista.com). If you have the best outfit, and best write-up, we’ll give you the sunglasses.

Bonne chance!
