Adventures in Copyright: Marc Our Words

modcloth rips off marc.jpgThere are bad knock-offs and then there are really bad knock-offs.

Modcloth’s version of Marc Jacob’s Ginny bag is strictly the latter. Their rendition, strangely called the Debbie Gibson bag, lacks all of the qualities that make us lust after MJ’s without disguising its design references.

Modcloth remembered the purple leather tassels, the leather woven striping and a magnetic snap closure. They even got the color palette right - the yellow, the purple, the black to white contrast - awkward combinations perfectly pegged. Everything else? A disaster.

Their “vegan-friendly” leather lacks the shine of Stella’s signature faux skins and the bulky shape and padded strap definitely aren’t what Marc had in mind. But if the gold and tortoise chain strap, sleek silhouette, padlock and subtle gray suede detailing aren’t that important to you - basically all the things that makes this bag worth the extra effort and dollars - then go ahead and put your money towards rent.

Just don’t blame us when your Debbie Gibson doesn’t make it past Memorial day.

Natalie Portman Covers Vogue’s Fall Issue

Nattie_Vogue.jpgKate Moss may have Vogue’s August cover, but the magazine has chosen someone else to hit their Fall Fashion issue:

Natalie Portman.

The actress spent all of Wednesday on a shoot for the magazine, surrounded by stylists and vegan goodies.

But we wonder whether all the clothes on set were vegan, or if bits of wool, silk, and leather made their way into the dressing rooms.

Obviously, expect a lot of Stella McCartney, but also look out for the interview, where Natalie will display her obvious charm and intelligence and also - hopefully - explain how she went from telling the press that she hated fashion to starting her own line of overpriced shoes.

Of course, since this is Vogue, the shoes will be called “affordable,” but that’s another story.

We really do like Natalie (seriously) and can’t wait to see the supercool cutie, and excellent role model for women, on the cover… but please rush the Kate Moss issue first!

Leona Lewis, Vegan Fashion Designer

Leona Lewis Apparently, having a number one single on iTunes isn’t enough for some girls - they also have to design clothes.

That’s the word from the UK, where the super-cute Leona Lewis has announced her latest project: a vegan clothing line made with cruelty-free materials.

Lewis has been a vegetarian since she was twelve, and doesn’t wear leather or fur - though judging from a quick Google Image search, pleather is totally okay, especially if it comes in a tight cut and a sparkly, metallic color.

In fact, maybe Lewis’ line can be the antidote to Natalie Portman’s own vegan collection, a series of shoes for Te Casan that are priced from $200 - $500. If we can get a pair of vegan black ballet flats for $30, we are so game - especially if, unlike Stella McCartney’s, they don’t fall apart after two weeks.
