Opening Ceremony‘s fall 2012 collection picks up where spring left off. There are no cats and things are a little less flirty and sweetly feminine, but still lots of fun, if a bit more sleek and sophisticated than past collections.

Many things have slowed down in Iceland since the island economy collapsed in 2008. Fashion is not one of those things, I learned at this weekend’s Reykjavik Fashion Festival. Still, two women are taking it slow, embracing the “slow fashion movement” to be exact, and trying to instill integrity, honesty and respect into design. Their show had one of the most talked about shows and collections at the RFF.
When I first heard that the house of Ella was a proponent of “slow fashion” I immediately asked, “what is slow fashion?” Is it like slow food? Small-scale, sustainable, high quality? Designer Katrin Maria Karadottir and Creative director and founder Elinros Lindal explained to me that that’s exactly what it is.
They walked me through their movement like grownups explaining something complex (algebra, fusion, the Kardashians) to a child. At the end of our chat I came to see that slow fashion (and slow things in general in the hands of women like Elinros and Katrin could be the future of Iceland’s economic prosperity.
Fashionista: What exactly does slow fashion mean here in Iceland?

New Vegan Label ‘Honest By’ Invites a Different Designer to Create Each Collection
By Alice Pfeiffer
Natalie Joos models Calla for Honest By
PARIS–This past January, Antwerpian designer and ex-creative director of Hugo Boss Bruno Pieters launched his new collaborative label ‘Honest By’. On top of being vegan and produced in a totally transparent manner, each collection is designed by another, like-minded fashion house.
Tomorrow, the line will see its first collaboration with Paris-Based, Canadian born label Calla. Think flower power, 2012 style. For the campaign, which we’re revealing exclusively, Pieters recruited casting director/Tales of Endearment blogger Natalie Joos to model.
But Pieters has more green tricks up his sleeve.
In May, the designer will also be a spokesperson at the Copenhagen Fashion Summit, hosted by the Crown Princess of Denmark. We chatted with him in Paris about Ghandi, luxury and honesty.

Madewell Fall 2012: Wes Anderson + ‘Urban Woodland’ + English Professor = So Much Awesome
By Hayley Phelan
Want to know what you’ll be wearing this fall? You don’t need a crystal ball to figure it out–or at least we don’t after seeing Madewell‘s fall 2012 offerings.
From cool, patterned shirts, to cozy-yet-quirky knits and pretty floral skirts, the brand has a knack for creating clothes we actually want to wear…all the time: they’re staples but they also have that element of special-ness that separates them from your boring old t-shirts. Or, to put it in the words of the press release: “It’s one part Wes Anderson-style quirk, one part urban woodland, one part proper English professor.” Read more »

Taylor Tomasi Hill Talks Consulting On (Not Designing!) Sigerson Morrison’s Fall Collection
Taylor Tomasi Hill (or TTH as she’s come to be known) is one of those fashion girls who seems to be doing a million things at once: As the artistic director at Moda Operandi, she is responsible for the shopping site’s editorial content; you probably know her best from looking at any street style blog–where her scarlet hair and standout style make her an easy target; but you might not know that she’s also the creative consultant for Sigerson Morrison shoes. Yep, that’s a lot of (very stylish) hats.
So last evening, at the Bowery Hotel, Sigerson Morrison presented their (vast) fall collection at a party hosted by Tomasi Hill and the Street Peeper’s Phil Oh. And while we overheard TTH tell a fellow editor that she was on a “cleanse day” her enthusiasm for the shoe label overpowered any (probable) faintness she was feeling after a day filled with only juice.

You’re Going to Want Everything From Coach’s New ‘Legacy’ Collection
By Dhani Mau
Over the past few seasons, Coach has gradually been stripping down the logos and embellishments and introducing simpler, more timeless pieces into their collections. And when they did, it was met with tremendous approval by the fashion industry, including us. Their collaboration with Net-a-Porter on a “classics” collection was an office obsession and when last season’s press preview was held in the company’s archives, we were honestly a little more interested in the archival pieces than the new ones. If, like us, you’ve always preferred a vintage Coach bag to the logo-covered shoulder bags of high school, you’re going to die over this new collection.
The brand new Legacy Collection is huge and includes not only handbags, but also small leather goods, iPad cases, shoes, outerwear, hats and even desk accessories–all of which have a simple, well-crafted, timeless-yet-stylish aesthetic. Basically, I want to just throw out everything I own and replace it with this stuff. Read more »

Oh, nothing. It’s just TOM FORD’S ENTIRE FALL 2012 COLLECTION! We have no idea how this came to be, but we stumbled on this video montage of still shots this morning on The Fashion Spot. It certainly looks like the fall collection we’ve heard so much about. Exotic skins? Check. A few show-stopping gowns? Check. Yep, and there’s Gwynnie’s Oscar cape. Read more »

Take a Look at Eddie Borgo’s Fall 2012 Collection, Inspired by New York’s Hidden Underground
By Leah Chernikoff
For fall, jewelry designer Eddie Borgo was inspired by hidden New York: those cogs and gears that click and hum just below the surface to make our city work.
He started with the work of Steve Duncan, a Brooklyn-based photographer who explores the “undercity” (Duncan’s word for it) of New York. “I found out about him because I wanted to do a collection based on expansion joints for a really long time,” he said. “I find them so interesting from an engineering standpoint and when I was doing research on these types of different pipe networks and expansion joints I found his photography.” Duncan’s photos were photocopied and pasted on mood boards propped around the apartment Borgo uses as a showroom in Paris.
Borgo was so excited, so passionate about his new collection and New York-as-inspiration that he even made me miss the city–not an easy thing to do in Paris.

Truth or Dare, Madonna’s new lifestyle brand for grown ups(as opposed to, you know, Material Girl at Macy’s) is starting to pick up speed.
On the heels of her first Truth or Dare fragrance campaign comes a preview of the music icon-turned-celebrity designer’s next product category: shoes! They’re being produced by Aldo, who had never done a footwear license agreement before. Thus, the collection is pretty affordable–and fairly massive. According to Footwear News, there will be over 60 styles including flats, heels and boots, which will range in price from $89 to $349.
Arianne Phillips, Madonna’s longtime stylist (and the costumer for her film W.E.) is the “creative consultant” for the line, which she says is inspired by Madonna’s past footwear choices. Read more »

Pierre Balmain, the more gently priced secondary line from Balmain, launched its second ever collection in Paris this week. The look is very Emmanuelle Alt (though she once styled Balmain’s shows, she has nothing to do with the line): Skinny black pants (in leather or denim), an ultra-soft tee, and blazers with strong shoulders. When you want to mix it up–a leather motocross jacket. There’s a little added glitz for fall in some sequined leggings, and a bit of Jane Birkin in the more flowy pieces (as you can see in the above video). And there’s a little bit of Carine Roitfeld in that incredibly sexy sheer dress. So basically if you want to look like a chic French “It” girl–here you go.

Nicholas Kirkwood Matched His New Ponytail Shoe to Florence Welch’s Hair Color
By Leah Chernikoff
As Nicholas Kirkwood walked us through his colorful, Paris in the ’20s-inspired fall collection (yes, part of that has to do with seeing Midnight in Paris he told us), we couldn’t help but pause at a shoe with a face and an actual ponytail attached to the heel. And how did this shoe come about?
The shoe, he told us, was inspired by Jean Cocteau and Elsa Schiaparelli, and the hair came from a wig shop. The hair color is important, too. Read more »
