Are You Up For a Shoe Change?

Feb 27, 2008 @ 1:38pm

SHOE!.jpgShoes, as we all know, are a personal decision.

A lot of women are one-shoe kind of women, buying Chanel spectators, Tod’s moccasins, or Havaianas every season no matter what that seasons' runways dictate.

But in light of what's happening right now on the runways, we're wondering: Do you vary your shoe choices based on the whims of a designer, buying into giant platforms from Lanvin and high-heeled sneakers from Dries?

With Dame Vivienne showing strange duck-like square shoes, and Nicolas Ghesquiere making a serious case for a return to Manolo-esque points at Balenciaga; here at Fashionista, we wonder, will you abandon your round toed shoes of the past couple years?

We all remember a time in the not-so-recent past when Carrie Bradshaw and friends made the Pointy Stiletto Pump a way of life, but could seasons of sweet Marc Jacobs Mary Janes be so déclassé all of a sudden? One has to hope that when you buy $700 shoes that you can wear them outside of 4TS for more than one season, and yet, fashion exists to change, doesn't it?

So will you drop your Miu Miu flats in favor of uber-pointy heels circa 1999? How about for square-toed flats circa never?

Believe it or not, we really are dying to know!

I never wear snub-nosed dress shoes. They look okay, but are supremely uncomfortable (I hate the way the toes can bump against the front of the shoe). Properly-designed pointy ones afford some wiggle room.

Let me start by saying that my least-favorite fashion era EVER is the late nineties; more specifically circa 1996 to 2000. The clothes, the makeup, the shoes ... it was just ALL WRONG! This includes the SATC-endorsed quintessential pointy Manolos.
That being said ... I still feel like the pointy toe is the natural governing shoe shape and that these periods of round and square will eventually just lead back to the point.
(with the exception of the incomparable Chanel spectator, of course ...)

Honestly, it depends on my mood, my outfit and what image I'm trying to convey (pointy shoes, I think, give off a more aggressive, confident vibe, whereas round toe shoes are more casual and approachable).

I mix it up depending on my mood but I agree that it always comes back to the pointy toe. They weren't always my favorite however if you want to make a statement it's the way to go. Plus it's like Stacey London is always telling us, they make your legs look a mile long.

shoes can be pretty expensive, so I'd get cheap trend-driven ones, but more expensive ones that can be worn for longer.

ive never liked super pointy shoes, they dont suit me and on top of that they make my size 10 feet look even bigger. that said, i dont mind a shoe with a very very veeeeery subtle point but nothing like the balenciaga ones in the pick. no matter how trendy they may get i wont go near them

I think round toes shoes are horribly unflattering, whether as exposed or peeking out underneath pants. Pointy toed shoes are flattering to many more outfits and look very clean and sophisticated. Even though ballet flats and mary-jane type shoes have been very popular recently, they just aren't as flattering as people would like them to be. Also, a properly fitting pointy toed shoe is just as comfortable as any other type of shoe.

I think it really depends on your feet if the shoe will look good on you. There are some styles that are just so unflattering to some feet while there are also some styles that look great on others!

Pointed shoes just look so very dated to me now. I wore them constantly about five years ago, but wouldn't touch them with a barge pole now- I only need to picture them sticking out of the bottom of my boot cut trousers and shudder at the memory. I don't think round toes can go out of style though- they're a vintage look to start with, so they're not exactly a trend. At any rate, I've been wearing round toed shoes for years and years and will never get bored of them, if for no other reason than they're much more flattering to my size 39s than pointed shoes ever were.

Pointed toes are sort of corporate now and worn far too often by women in black polyester pin strip pants.... Platforms are sexiest to me and I think that Christian Louboutins, being the sexiest of all shoes usually being at least slightly rounded have solidified it as the dominate style.

For casual wear, flats, flats, flats. They're so amazingly comfortable and versatile. Plus, it's easier to chase down children while wearing flats than it is wearing heels. For formal wear, heels, the higher the better. Whether it's pointy or rounded depends on the outfit, but I tend to veer towards having a slight point.

I hate pointed shoes. And they make my feet look longer. I remember the times when there was simply nothing else in the (affordable) stores and if that's going to come back, I'm going to buy several pairs of round toe shoes now;)

Pointy-toe is not for me, at some people it look great! I prefer the almond-shaped toe, makes my feets look better. Just in between the pointy and the round toe. I've found a really nice pair of pumps with almond-shaped toe here at RomanoFirenze.
