Fashion Collecting: Streamlining or Splurging?

Mar 10, 2008 @ 3:39pm

blair is cute.JPGPosh Spice owns 100 Hermès handbags. We realize this is common knowledge but we still bat it around the office regularly with general disbelief.

Blair Waldorf probably has 100 headbands, and Aerin Lauder has a closet full of black pants, but is there a singular signature item that you would buy in bulk at Costco (like Tom Ford Sunglasses)?

My best friend's mom has 21 pairs of leopard print shoes. But this has more to do with the fact that she loves leopard print and shoes, and has the means to buy a surplus of both. We know another woman that collects David Yurman Jewelry, and owns nearly every piece he's ever made. But my personal favorite is a woman I know that buys three of everything to honor her three daughters. Seriously, three Hermès porcelain bracelets (is this an Hermès thing?), three identical Chanel handbags, three brightly colored Tod's loafers, whatever.

On the other hand, I've heard people talk about how freeing it is to have a uniform. Living like perpetual school girls, some women buy multiples to make their morning routine less stressful, and sleep a little longer without thinking about the excruciating sartorial decision waiting within their closet. I know from experience that this is really helpful, when you only have a couple shirts and a few pairs of jeans and cords, as I do, getting dressed is a five minute proposition.

So I guess what we're wondering here is whether collecting clothes is a byproduct of considerable means, or a call for simplicity, and perhaps more importantly, does anyone else actually do this? Or is this a myth perpetuated by Anna Wintour and her Prada dress fixation?

if i buy LOTS of something, it is probably something that I might not find later on, and it fits me perfectly. like uniqlo skinny jeans. some flats that are incredibly comfortable. Just had a friend who was buying his 12th pair of levis engineered jeans(they were big in europe) and just was sad they're actually stopping to sell them.

...OR it could just be another type of OCD.....there just may be some type of psychology behind the behavior..but that's not a bad OCD to have!!!!

I think that making the morning routine easier starts with an obsession with yourself in a certain look or item of clothing.

For winter, I know I will always look pulled together (and flatter my figure) in a big bright scarf, black skinny jeans tucked into boots and a leather or schoolboy jacket. Accessorizing and mixing it up is fun but my uniform default is my safety blanket.

Everyone needs a little bit of a uniform to stay sane and comfortable. Plus, it makes dressing up that much more exciting...

speaking of sunglasses, is it just me or does anyone else see the striking resemblance between the urban outfitter "Endless Summer" shades and the "Super Strength" ones from Karen Walkers new line?

well, it's good to have a signature item. it's like your trademark or something. so i guess it's ok to do it.

I don't stock up on multiples in anything really fashionable or awesome, but I have multiple pairs of a black leather, kitten heeled, pointed toe shoe, because I wore the first pair out and can't bear to live another day without them in the back of my closet, ready whenever I need them. I really hate shoe shopping so the thought of my shoes wearing out terrifies me.

I collect gloves and walking-length umbrellas. I can never have enough, as long as they're beautiful. Unusual umbrellas are definitely my signature item.

The thought of having a uniform [self imposed or otherwise] and wearing the same thing every day fills me with depression and dread.

I collect pieces for sure. It has nothing to do with a brand or style, I collect what I think is meaningful in fashion and that I can one day hand down to my (not born yet kids) or donate to the Costume Institute. Things like pieces from Tom Ford's last collection for Gucci; The dress from Miu Miu Spring Summer '07 that is white on top and navy on the bottom (still with tags); YSL's 1965 collection; Alber Elbaz's premier colection for Lanvin; Hermes scarves; Chanel quilted bags. I realize though, unlike most other girls my age, I can indulge in my obsession because I can afford to - for which I am very grateful.
