I Need More Photos!

Jun 23, 2008 @ 4:50pm

gemma ward headshot.jpgI'm an aspiring model, and i have few good photos already. However, I need more!

The problem is I have very little money of my own and my parents are not willing to help.

I figure an up and coming photographer might need a model to build their portfolio?

Any ideas or suggestions?

Please!

where do you live? if you're in nyc, try getting into one of the smaller agencies. open casting calls or something. the photographer i intern with does a lot of test shoots with models for both their book and his, but they're all from legitimate agencies where he has contacts.

another option is try finding a photography student who is also looking to build their portfolio. i'm sure they'd be happy to work with you.

take poloroids of yourself being super fierce and send them out to photographers and agencies

i'm not sure if that will help you become a super model but it ought to help.

Call/email your local community-based magazine and tell them you need a portfolio and will model for free. If your community doesn't have local mags, call one in a city within traveling distance. Times are tough and everyone's budgets are being cut.

We use Ford models mostly, but there has been more than one occasion when a model has backed out, we needed to do a last minute shoot and couldn't book someone, or for whatever reason ended up using a non-professional model. It works out great for us because it keeps costs down, and then they get clips in a publication as well.

You can find these kind of mags at your local grocery store. Just look at the masthead and that should give you an email/phone number where you can get in touch with an editor or photographer.

Anonymoose is right when saying that a photo student is a good option. There are plenty of photo students, no matter what city you're in, that would be happy to trade. When I was in school for photo my classmates found most of their models this way because they couldn't afford to pay.

try going to your local art school and asking the photography students.

If you want pictures to start building your portfolio:

Get on websites like http://www.modelmayhem.com/ and craigslist. Check out the photography/art schools in your area. Photography students usually can't get girls from agencies unless they are super good and have connections so they are always on the hunt for models (or model sized girls) to shoot.

If you want to get signed to an agency go to as many agencies as you can and try to get picked up.

Don't under any circumstances spend money for people to take your picture. Honestly you don't need a portfolio to get signed. Agencies will take polaroids of you. Once you’re signed they will send you out on test shoots so you can start building your portfolio.

Craiglist. But MAKE SURE you go with a parent/adult because those ads can sometimes be sketchy.

Also if you have an art school near you, make posters saying that you're a model looking for a photographer. Art students are always looking for good models to add to their portfolios.
