"Like, They're Kind of a Trend"

Jun 26, 2008 @ 4:48pm

american apparel swimwear top.jpgI was in American Apparel today with a friend and I was trying on some bathing suits.

With every suit that I put on, my "nips" would show through the tops.

My friend had an uncontrollable laughing fit, and the saleslady said, "I don't understand whats so funny. They're like kind of a trend."

Is it just the jaded sales people at American Apparel?

Or is the no bra and visible nips an actual trend?

I think the lady was just trying to sell you a bathing suit. I hope the visible nips is never a trend!

I have no idea about your actual question. My question is...

Why is there a 13 year old girl in a bikini on this page? This is a disturbing image. The girls looks very uneasy, and frankly, I am too.

LOL that comment is hilarious. Personally, I think that unless you are in the water, your "nips" shouldn't be too obvious. It's just bad bathing suit etiquette.

Um, I don't know about every one else but intentional "nip slips" are definitely not a trend in my book. American Apparel sales people can be so pretentious about really weird stuff sometimes. What's next, camel toe's gonna be cool? please, AA sales people get over yourselves!

From what I understand, showing your nippies is some sort of a trend--a trend you don't want to participate in.

i work at aa and i have to say, the whole look is about sex- sheer tops, hot pants, mini skirts, tight jeans... it gets kinda ridiculous, but that's aa for you. i don't think it's a trend many other places though. wear if you dare...

Unless you're going to a pool populated exclusively by American Apparel employees, don't do it. Nips = not OK in the real world.

as an ex AA employee.... The suits are sheer because they're cheaply made, no top ling =nip show. conveniently for AA they're into being pervy so they run with it, but in real life... it's kind of obnoxious to go to a public beach or pool in a clearly see-thru suit, example A hanging out with some friends and their guys? I'd feel slightly pissed if one of my friend was alll look at my boobs in my see thru suit in front of my BF. I say if you gotta rock one just avoid the water....

If it is a trend, then it's kind of a vulgar one. And not vulgar in a good, John-Waters-circa-"Flamingo" way, just in a...too much information way. Also, I think it's a pre-requisite to have some serious 'tude to work at AA.

I think it depends on how comfortable you are, trend or no. If it's going to make you feel self-conscious, don't buy it because you won't be comfortable.

I always ask myself, "Would I make fun of someone if I saw them wearing this on the street?" In this case, the answer is a resounding "yes," trend or not.

eh.

if it is a trend it's been around since the 90s when rachel on friends was always nipping.

personally I just buy bikini tops with a slight bit of lining and/or padding (slight!!) and that way there's no nipping.

All American Apparel clothes are kind of like that, it's one of the main reasons I don't shop there... I think it's part of the AA "look" but not a real, separate trend. Most of the models on their website have it, anyway.

i had the horror of buying a aa bathing suit last summer on the fly and had no idea my nipples were showing. i wore it to a child's bday pool party and had to be informed by my boyfriends 12 year old cousin what was going on with my "chestular area". horrific.

A trend, yeah, hah! Just because a lot of girls are rockin' the visable nipple does not mean its a trend. American Apparel can be frustrating, their clothes rock but are always inconsistent in fit and sizing. If you feel comfortable exposing that much, go for it, but know its not *always* appropriate. If you don't feel comfortable with visable nipple though, don't fear, its not a trend you are missing out on.

Personally, I would go for a practical bathing suit. Considering most are much more revealing when wet, I would get something that properly conceals my nippes when dry or else (as in the case with a lot of AA bathing suits) when they are wet it will be like wearing colored plastic wrap as far as coverage!

i wouldn't do it.

think five or more years from now - wouldn't you be humiliated to remember you used to walk around flashing your nipples?

No bra/sheer bra/perky nips peeking through is totally a trend. But exposed breast with areola and everything flashing the world is quite another thing. I had a pool party last year and a girl showed up in a flesh colored American Apparel Bikini Top. Once she jumped in the pool there was really no point to her even wearing a bathing suite, you could see everything (and I mean everything). I hate on her, but at the same time I was awestruck at how much confidence she had. But then again who wouldn't be confident if they were a skinny hipster girl with perky boobs?

I say if you have the body and the confidence to flash some perky nips go for it. But if you are a more modest type forgo the American Apparel.

AA wants you to show everything! and not wear underwear! It's so annoying sometimes!

a very popular "trend" now is anything lingerie inspired, so that could be what the salesperson was trying to get at

American Apparel is so pornographic but at the same time so bland. Go figure.
I'd never buy anything from AA. Other than their T-shirts, their clothes are ill-fitting and over-priced.

Haha! I just left American Apparel, and this is so funny to me because we always used to joke about how excited we were when new crazy items came in. Then we get on the metro and ask ourselves, "Why is that creepy man staring me in my neon mesh t shirt?" I think we definitely became jaded working in the store because it was our own naked little bubble lol. It's definitely not a trend!!
