Searching for a Timeless Bag

Jul 15, 2008 @ 9:14am

valentino bag.jpgI want to invest in a great, classic handbag - but i dont want to spend all my money on an "IT" bag only for it to be relegated to the back of my closet by next season.

Can anyone suggest a classic bag that will still be chic in two years time, won't appear on the arm of every tween next year and won't be considered passe next season?

Thanks for your help!

xx

First of all, I think you should go with black, because it matches with everything. Second of all, don't choose a bag with a lot of detailes. Fringes, studs etc, eventually it will look a bit "dated".

I really like this Chloe bag: http://www.net-a-porter.com/product/30474#

It's simple and versatile. You can use it as a clutch and a bag.

I'm kind of obsessed with this Mulberry bag lately. It's classic black in a beautiful leather, and can be carried in two different ways.

I am personally a huge fan of the "Guess" bag. I think they're all very classy and appeal to all age groups! This Satchel might be what you're looking for! Slightly over budget at 115 bones but still, a very grande investment! =P
If it's not exactly your style, I stresss that you take a look around their site! They have some really lush merch! =]

i now have two chanels (both vintage as i'm not mega rich) and honestly they haven't dated in 10 years and i always, always feel extra special when i wear them.

but go for neautral colour with not too many 'fashiony' bits. i adore botega, ysl and the plainer chloe bags.

go to a department store with lots of different brands so you can walk about and see them all then hoopefully one will jump out at you and you fall in love!

I highly recommend the Chanel Grand Shopping Tot (GST) in either Black or Beige. Not only is it classic, its large enough to carry all your essentials.

to MissRocks @ 2:00. I don't mean any offense, but you must surely be yanking our chain. I don't think Guess bags qualify as timeless bags. I do not find them "classy and appeal to all age groups"... quite the opposite! As Karl would say, they're very demode.

along with guest from July 23rd. you must be kidding, missrocks. $115 is not an investment.

Do not be rude. I think people are entitled to their own opinion. At least MissRocks was thoughtful enough to even recommend a bag...Did you? You're comment is anti-productive.

YSL Uptown in calf skin, if you can find one. I have it in gray and black and find it to be the perfect size for day and not too heavy. It's a frame bag with a doctor's bag shape.

I love Mulberry too, though.

Chanel flap in black, white or beige. Louis Vuitton Damier Speedy. YSL Muse. Anything that's simple in design and colour. Good luck!

There are many beautiful bags from L.A.M.B. that have classic lines but come in black, interesting patterns, and cool colors. I love this one:

I would certainly agree with most of the comments suggesting a Mulberry, the Bayswater is my favourite.
But if you are looking for something within a smaller budget, without a doubt Topshop is your best bet.
I live in Ireland and even thought the flagship Topshop store in Dublin is brilliant, I usually shop the online store, where I recently bought this navy leather beauty: http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=true&catalogId=19551&storeId=12556&categoryId=74446&parent_category_rn=130031&productId=742610&langId=-1
It's also available in a tan brown colour, but the navy with the gold detailing really does go with everything I wear! It's the perfect size with three compartments and the chain handle is cute, but I don't use it as it's quite long and the shoulder handles are perfect on their own.
I usually buy a new bag every couple of months and my last three purchases have been from Topshop, one of them being a classic matte brown leather bag from the Jocasi (www.jocasi.com) label that they sold for a while.

Mischa Barton's new line of vinatge inspired leather, suede and tapestry bags on www.asos.com really took me by surprise, they're really nice! Even though I think she's turned into a bit of a moron, I have to say, I'm probably going to give in a spend my next pay check on my favorite style, this one. http://www.asos.com/Mischa-Barton/Asos-Exclusive-Mischa-Barton-Embossed-Leather-Vintage-Bag/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=298310&cid=5153&clr=Tan&sh=0

if you're really willing to invest in a great bag, the chanel 2.55 is a timeless classic. you can also consider the hermes kelly or birkin, the chloe bay or heloise shoulder bag, the ysl muse or majorelle or overseas tote, the miu miu coffer bag, or even the marc jacobs stam. i agree that mulberry bags are also fabulous--the bayswater is a definite classic, but i also love the milton hobo and jody shoulder bag. as for color, i would opt for black or brown, since they go with the most outfits. i hope i helped, and remember to tell us what you finally decide on!

if you don't want to spend over a thousand on a nice bag, you should check out the coach legacy or hamptons bags, or kate spade handbags. checkout their websites--coach.com and katespade.com

Did I just see Guess bags mentioned in this post? I would rather use a plastic bag to carry all of my loot rather than one of those things, they're ghastly altogether.
Don't bother on Chloe, Dior, LV or Gucci if you're looking for a classic, even though most of their bags are super cute, they're also super common.
I wouldn't bother with a Prada if you're under 30, again i love most of their bags, but when I saw a pic of Ashley Tisdale with a Prada on her arm I nearly choked, it looks so wrong.
If you have the cash, without a doubt, go for Chanel or Hermes.

The Chanel 2.55 gets my vote. But reading through these comments, I'm reminded that Mulberry's also great. I would also take the Coach suggestion seriously; they have some really nice stuff (just stay away from the monograms).

i've never been one to carry around the same bag all the time- i usually just rotate b/w a couple, depending on the outfit, but recently i invested in the City Tote by Foley + Corinna in the Maple or Whiskey color and I carry that every single day. It's big enough to pack with school and gym stuff, but if you only have a few things it folds over and appears smaller. there is a handle but also a strap to put over your shoulder, which i've been able to use whether it's folded or not. it's very lightweight and soft, getting even softer with age. it goes with almost everything i own and i can still take it out at night b/c i can cram it into a corner and it doesn't take up a lot of space, unlike more structured, large bags. there are 4 pockets- 2 inside and 2 outside. the only downsides are: the zippers can get sticky sometimes, there is no way to close off the main compartment, the strap is kinda slim so if you have a lot of heavy stuff inside it can dig into your shoulder and you need to treat the outside with a leather/waterproof treatment b/c it's just untreated leather. other than that, I absolutely love my bag. i got it from revolveclothing.com- call them and they give you 30% off your purchase. and check retailmenot.com for coupons, both for this and other stuff you want to buy online- it has a lot of online codes you can use to get good deals. and if you want it to be even more versitile you can get it in black or something else neutral.

You should totally consider visiting a vintage clothing store. there you can find TIMELESS purses...etc. for a thrifty price. Who knows, you might start a trend.
