Hallway To Runway

Aug 17, 2008 @ 11:22am

school uniforms.jpgI just started my sophomore year of high school last week and it's really hard to be chic with the super stiff dress code my school insists on making us follow.

Unfortunately, it's not quite Gossip Girl, I can't accessorize my plaid mini with thigh highs and patent heels. But does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can spice up my basic dress code?

I don't want to be stuck wearing skinny jeans and polo shirt all year.

Please help!

Thanks!

fun jewelry is usually a good way to improve upon blah dress codes. what about taking a cue from gossip girl and going with colorful tights instead of the thigh highs?

Fun jewelry, scarves, boots, flats. I know it's hard but just have fun with it!

try to find fun and unique jewelery, scarves, headbands, belts and anything else you can find. make sure they are fun colors and designs, and everyone will be jealous with how unique you can look with just a few simple accessories. just be careful not to over do it.

Thanks i really need advice, it's so hard for me to stay in style and on top of that i'm one of the fashion writers at my school's newspaper and the the fashion writer at the teen newspaper i work at.... its kind of up to me to be a trendsetter and i'm so limited

But anyway...the dress code is basically: nothing shorter than your fingertip length, and i'm really tall and i have long arms so that's always hard to do, we can't wear spaghetti straps, all straps have to be more than the width of your three fingers, no halter tops or tube tops whatsoever, we can't even wear jackets or sweaters to conceal them we can't wear leggings, no flip-flops( not that i'd wear them anyway) any shorts that come to the mid-thigh must be worn under transparent jogging pants (eww, i know right?)we can't even wear scarves as headbands,
all this and its a public school,

Get a great bag in a fun color (like a silver or red diaper bag) to be a signature peice, and like the above posters said, keep the clothes within dress code but grab a few chunky bagles or colored tights and a scarf to put with your basics. No sense in splurging on your wardrobe if you have a boring uniform-spice up what you have with accessories and lots of confidence!

I'd say buy sale pieces from stores that fit your uniform (blazer, skirt, pants, whatever..) that fit you REALLY well. You'd be surprised what a difference this makes. Go super classic and get a fun, trend haircut.
fyi - I went to that new ae store - Maritn and Osa - I got the best fitting suit for under $100 on sale and it's so well made and fits SO well. Good luck and look around do not buy anything that's not super perfect.
good luck : )
