Jewel Cake

Aug 26, 2008 @ 9:13am

kiki dunst.jpgFor some reason I've been watching Marie Antoinette a lot lately, the Sofia Coppola version.

I know it's kind of slow - and not the best film plot wise - but it's so beautiful I can't help but watch it over and over.

I love looking at the delicious cakes, but it's the jewelry that I'm seriously obsessed with. Kirsten Dunst literally drips with diamonds.

Any suggestions on where to buy really amazing costume jewelry?

And Tom Binns is so not costume.

definitely flea markets - the ones teeming with old ladies and rickety wooden tables. Estate sales are also options.

The french museums sell copies of Marie Antoinette's original jewelry! http://www.boutiquesdemusees.fr/en/shop/special/169-marie-antoinette-exhibition

Try your grandmother :-)
Or travel to Europe: So many museums sell these kinds of things. Such museums are normally located in castles, châteaus or palaces. Schönbrunn in Vienna for example; I was there wehn I was a child and I remember that they sold jewelry that resembled Kaiserin Sisi's.
You might also want to try Esterhazy.

I guess France and Austria are good places to go. Austria has managed to stuff all of the past monarchy's history in every castle they could find. I loved going to museums about kings, queens and princesses when I was a child.

My goodness, I know exactly what you mean, I have watched the movie probably 6 times already, and I still cannot get over the all the eye candy.
I found earring similar to a pair she is wearing in a vintage store in my town, but then again I live in upstate New York.

in past season Balenciaga made j'adore-able ones (a bit pricey though, non?) so again, try looking for some in vintage stores. Raid your mother's or grandmother's jewelry box if desperate.
