Shopping in New York

Aug 01, 2008 @ 9:14am

i heart new york.jpgHi Everyone!

I'm headed to the Big Apple for the first time this summer and I'm looking for some shopping advice.

Every tour book names Soho, but isn't that just like any other mall - outside of course?

I want to be able to spend my money on things that no one at home will have. I'm not coming all the way to New York to shop at the Gap and I know Fashionista's readers know about the best hidden places.

Thanks!

definitely check out cheap jacks 5th and 31st I think. And of course, stores like Opening Ceremony, OAK, and M by M are always a great time.

You're sort of on target about Soho...if you stick to the well-travelled streets (Broadway, basically) its all of the same stores they have in suburban malls. Avoid that...but if you branch off onto the neighboring streets there are great little stores like Opening Ceremony on Howard St., and lots on Greene and Mercer. And then of course you can walk to Nolita and hit up Mulberry, Mott and Elizabeth Sreets, and then onto Rivington St on the Lower East Side...okay, you see there's a lot of stuff around here.

And if you wanted to really branch out, go to Williamsburg, walk down Bedford Ave from North 7th, and then all along Grand St and Metropolitan Ave. Tons of little stores, and with a few exceptions you wont be looking at anything they have in Iowa or wherever you're coming from.

Soho is actually a great place to shop they have tons of cute boutiques and cool jewelry stores as well as the usual chain shops, plan to spend a day or afternoon there and you won't be disapointed! if you go make sure to stop off at lucky strike a great restaurant for a quick bite.

Hey,

My favorite stores are probably Albertine & Claudine (sister stores on Christopher Street that have an amazingly well edited selection of dresses, and accessories), Te Casan (BEST shoe store in town - the pumps are as gorgeous as louboutins but are half the price because they're emerging designers) and Beacons Closet, where you can always find amazing and ridiculously cheap stuff if you look hard enough. Have fun!
