Where to Begin?

Sep 03, 2008 @ 11:10pm

daria with such short hair.jpgHello everyone,

I'm moving to New York next year to begin my fashion career. I want to become a stylist/editor and I know that I'll have to do a lot of interships and work very hard, but that's not the problem - my problem is that I can't figure out where to go to school.

I'm finding it hard to relate my aspirations to the choices at Parsons (actually, can anyone tell me about any other schools?) I know they offer several paths of study like Fashion Merchandising, Accessory Design, Retail Buying and so on...but what do those have to do with styling/editing? I also have a bit of a language barrier with English, so i'm not entirely sure that I've misunderstood - maybe I'm just missing something?

Can anyone give me any advice on what kind of study to take up if I want to be a stylist or editor in the future?

Thanks beforehand.

I will tell you that the one thing that got in me in the door of every magazine I applied to was my writing skills. If you want to work for a publication there is a true defecit of talented writers who also know fashion, so that's always a good entree.

Also- I think multiple languages is a plus, as are really exceptional organizational skills. So basically, it doesn't matter what you study, as long as you're willing to start at the bottom and do anything you're asked! Good Luck!

I go to LIM in Manhattan (laboratory institute of merchandising) and I minor in Fashion Publishing, major in fashion merchandising..we have a ton of contacts here and a lot of oppurtunities in that field so definitely check out here as well. It's a little pricey but the employment rate is 98%

LIM sounds good for what I want to do, and I'd love to major in Fashion Publishing and minor in fashion merchandising... That sounds amazing. Does anyone have a rough idea of whether it would be actually physically and financially possible to do something imilar to what this peron wants to do and move to NY from the UK to do it? How old would you have to be?

If you really wanted to be an editor the best thing to do would be major in something intellectual like english, psychology, whatever. Fashion merchandising isn't really going to help you...it's all about connections. Go wherever you want to go and work on getting internships!

I'm planning to learn French, Italian and Spanish and maybe even russian, can anyone tell me if there are any other languages that could be particularly helpful?

french, italian and spanish sound like they would get you very far in the fashion world. maybe think of japanese or chinese instead of spanish, depending on if you want to work stateside or globally.

So im in a bit of stitch as well...high school senior graduating Jan. 2010...I always loved fashion, but I never thought it important to pay attention to designers or models names. Now I know I want to work in the fashion branch of Public Relations and I'm clueless. I can't do a summer internship because I have to make credits in the summer...Gosh...any advice? I know Spanish and I'm teaching myself French; I know that's some what of importance in the PR business especially since I want to travel and work in Madrid and Paris. Yet again, any advice?
Thanks a bunch!

F.I.T & L.I.M. But my first choice would be F.I.T. That's were so many people who are very successful in the Fashion Industry went.

if you really want amazing internships, parsons is it. the internship coordinator there knows literally everyone and can get you on the path to working where you are dreaming of.

the tuitions steep, the facilities suck, but youre paying for the parsons name brand which is highly regarded in the industry.
