Clueless with a Dream Internship

Jan 05, 2009 @ 9:38pm

harpers bazaar cover.jpgSo I was just offered an amazing opportunity to intern at a Hearst Publication for the spring.

I'm so excited, but terrified about what to wear! I feel I'm too young to wear business suits and would just look silly in anything too 'done up' because I'm just a student intern.

What should I wear? Are flats unacceptable? Think J.crew, Gap, etc. budget. Any advice or help is welcomed and would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much in advance!

First of all congratulations!

As a former Hearst mag intern I can tell you don't worry no one will expect you to wear a suit, and you don't have to worry about wearing expensive designers.

Flats are totally okay, and actually very practical considering if you're going to be a fashion intern, you'll probably be sent out on runs to pick up samples. I can't tell you how many times I saw girls show up their first day in heels, and then crying when their feet were all blistered from walking all over the city.

The only thing thats really looked down upon are rubber flip flops, anything too revealing, cut off shorts and things of that nature (but since it's winter I'm sure you won't be wearing those).

You can dress simply in jeans, and a nice top and flats. Just wear something that you're going to be comfortable in!

Good luck!!

Stick to cute skirts and tops..cute casual. Long tunics and sweaters with tights and flats or boots is always cute. Dress your look up with accessories. It's not always what you wear, it's how you wear it :)

I had internships at 2 different fashion magazines in college and you should definitely keep these few things in mind:

-be comfortable! "stylecrusader" is right, you don't want to be freezing cold or have blistered feet... you'll be miserable all day.

-don't worry about blowing your dough on top designers, just be fashionable and "put-together."

-try not to be a cookie-cutter... risk-taking is very much appreciated in the magazine industry.

and above all else..

-you are there to work, so don't get so caught up in your wardrobe that you don't get your sh*t done!

Good luck and enjoy :-)

Honestly I work with a major (mens) stylist/fashion editor right now and you will not be expected to strut around wearing Givenchy and Balenciaga. As long as you look presentable, it's more about knowing your shit and being able to work hard...it's not about "omg what is the intern wearing."

sorry if any of that sounded mean, but seriously it's not about you...

Um, as a clueless person just reading this, maybe look at Jak & Jil for ideas but obviously you don't want to rock up looking like as mini-Carine or Anna.

congrats
this may sound kinda sketchy but i always use Filene's basement. I recentley bought a $50 michael kors trench at 80% off and two Givenchy scarves ($30 each). I also saw Lacroix, Kate Spade, Marc Jacobs and Just Cavalli there. I
