An Ugg Alternative?

Jan 16, 2009 @ 11:57am

the ugliest uggs.jpgI have a dilemma.

I live in Chicago and the high today is -2. There isn't even hope of positive temperatures.

It snows everyday and I'm desperate for a boot that's both cute, warm, goes with everything and makes it easy to navigate the city streets. The only catch? I will not wear Uggs.

I will stand out barefoot before I spend a cent on those monstrosities.

Please help!

why don't you get normal boots and just wear really thick, warm, fuzzy socks.

Any negative feelings for Sorel? Their classic, with the black rubber and felt inner is so warm, water proof and made with a smaller grid (can you say that? The grid of the soles?) than most winter boots. This ensures they don't pack snow underneath, which can be a pain. Especially if the temperature is just around 0.
I like the look of them, they where practically as omnipresent as Ugg a couple of years back where I live.

Here are some options:

Sorel's Joan of Arctic boot, it was featured as style.com's item of the week.

Spyder makes incredibly warm comfy boots.

this is a nice style

Totally feel your pain, since I live in Chicago too, and share a similar hatred of Uggs (and basically anything with external fur on my feet - too hobbit-like). I've become a fan of duck-type boots.

There are the classic L.L. Bean Boots:

(They actually look decent with leggings or skinny jeans tucked in)

I just bought a pair of J. Crew Bromley boots, which have been serving me extremely well these past few frigid days. Added bonus: they are super on sale:

Good luck!

So I know you said no uggs, but I think these are pretty cute, and they look nothing like regular uggs....plus they're waterproof.

haha, another montreal here, and mine are the caribou model, simple black and white. They're about 120 ish CAN, but it's totally worth the money, and while uggs are double the price and are useless once they hit slush, these winter can't mess with you.

c-town shorty,

go with rubberduck boots. on karmaloop.com. for those chilly winters in the windy city. to everyone else, dont buy uggs for the winter. they are not made for snowy, icy weather. the salt from the snow will eat up the sheep skin in uggs. its stupid how people think they are made for this type of weather but it aint so.

peace n stay warm!

Chicago here too. The temps this year are ridiculous. Lori's has some Pajar (made in Montreal) that are cute/moony and warm ...
