Summer in the UK

Jan 20, 2009 @ 8:33am

how to dress in london.jpgI'm going to be in England all summer and I'm totally stumped on what I'll need.

I know it's a bit far off but I feel like I should start shopping now and I just have no idea what to pack for the whole summer. Is it really always gloomy there? Do I need to bring warm wintery clothes just in case or should I be fine with lots of layers?

And should I bring mostly boots or flats?

Please help!

Yes it sort of is I'm afraid, but you could get away with light material ( floral dresses, chiffon blouses etc) if you can compliment them with a blazer or something of the sort, hopefully it will be warm as our winter has been very cold.To be on the safe side i would say light cardigans and opaque tights on the gloomier days.

I would also advise you to bring flats with at least 3 pairs of boots for safety, our summers are notorious for being wet.

Hope i have been of service :)

With Top Shop at your disposal, why would you start shopping in the US now, when you can shop there in the summer...

I lived in London a few summers ago, and it's really difficult what to expect from the weather there. One day it would be really miserable and hot, and the next it would be quite nippy. I would say to bring summery clothes, but also maybe a couple of sweaters and a jacket or two. Oh, and jeans and rainboots. It tends to rain there. Although, it was really sunny most of the summer.

I think bringing spring clothes that are good for layering would be your safest bet.

i would recommend spring coats. i wear them throughout the summer. also, a nice lightweight raincoat (totally key) and boots are definitely key. in terms of fashion, and not practicality, it is way different than NYC, so wait till you get there, check out the street styles and start shopping. some experts are saying parity with the dollar in the next few months which is craaazzzzy.

Firstly, although it is rare we do have our good days, but obviously our hot will prbably be your warm. we love summer dresses and Topshop in Oxford street will feed your every desire - believe me.

Being a Londoner I'd say only bring the essentials, pack light, and maybe only brands you cant get here. Once your here you will shop! There are so many places to shop like Westfields, Oxford Street, markets like Brick Lane, Portobello sell independent designers and of course many, many sales going on (thanks to the recession there are bargains to be had!. I'm sure you'll go home with alot more than you came with. I have a good friend from California who came with a couple of suitcases of clothes she took home unworn!

As many commenters say, I'd save my money now and spend it there: Topshop is really amazing as they say, and the array of markets/small designers boutiques/selfridges/charity shops make shopping there amazing..Plus, if you take the essentials with you you can buy the stuff as you need it (you will probably need hunter wellingtons, but as the weather changes constantly, god knows what else you'll need), and saving money before your departure will allow you to splurge on the amazingness that is London shopping!

Hi there
I totally would agree with some comments relating to shopping when u get there. The first time I went to London i took too many clothes and ended up shopping because the shopping was AMAZING.. esp the markets, little shops in soho and Oxford street... enjoy while u are there. If I was going in summer, I would take jeans, a couple of dresses, light tops a jacket, opaques a pair of boots and trainers and buy the rest there... London is AMAZING for shopping.

where in england? london is known for it's temperamental weather, and although it can be really annoying, it's kind of fun because it means you can wear whatever you want! I live in London and when im home for summer i love layering up when there's still a chill in the air. Defo bring one warm coat, it can get super cold at night. I would bring a jacket or two that you can just throw over cardi's or hoody's. As for footwear, everyone wears boots here even in the summer...you will probably need wellies at some point to! but for those sunny days some flats would be great and even sandals. Hope that's helpful, enjoy your stay!! eva xx

summers are usually a reasonable temperature, so I'd pack jeans, miniskirts, sundresses, etc. The issue is rain, so heels are good, but sweaty feet + heels that are new from Topshop = well, you know... I tend to wear a lot of denim, flats and cotton tees/vests, sometimes with cardigans.

As a londoner I'd say prepare fore the worst but it isn't always that gloomy- we've been getting pretty nice summers recently! But have a variety of clothes, be ready for the unpredictable.
