Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place...

Jan 06, 2009 @ 1:29am

rachel zoe the stylist.jpgSo I live in the Dallas area (I attend college here) and I am majoring in Fashion Merchandising.

I want to be a stylist after I graduate in May, but I don't know where to start. I know Rachel Zoe worked at Jane magazine for a while, so should I be looking for a magazine job? Should I go with a designer? I just don't know!

I am wanting to move to NY or LA (no more Dallas, please) so I can have more opportunities. Any advice you may have would be great!

I would say, look for assistant positions--either assisting a freelance stylist or see if any magazines have vacancies for fashion assistants.

have you done any internships which might have given you some contacts??

I have been in the fashion industry for most of my life. My suggestion is that you transfer to F.I.T. in NYC or F.I.D.M. in LA and secure an internship position with a fashion brand while you are going to school. Go to the websites of brands you love, click on Contacts, then email their H.R. departments to inquire about an internship. Many internships within the fashion industry are not paid internships, therefore you will need to get a job while you intern. Many major brands also have retail stores. Ask the H.R. rep if there are any openings in their retail stores. Check out Craig's List for room-mates. It is very expensive to leave in either city. You will need a car if you decide to move to LA. The biggest difference between the two fashion capitals is that NY is bigger, and the brands are more haute-couture, mature and larger in scope. LA is more focused on denim and smaller haute-bohemian designers. I have lived and worked for many years in both cities. It really boils down to who you are and which city you would fit in best.

Raisa, there is nothing wrong with fashion in LA. I am a designer and I am based in LA. There are gazillion styling positions in LA, especially since Hollywood is here. Red carpets, shoots, award shows, tv shows, movies.
This is coming from a person who spelled "where" "wear". ;)
