A Change in Shopping Habits

Mar 02, 2009 @ 4:46pm

barneys shopping bags.jpgI'm writing an article for my journalism class and I was wondering: With the recession, have any of you changed your shopping habits?

If so, how?

Thanks so much!

Yes, somewhat. I've always been a thrifty shopper and taken advantage of sample sales and store sales. I still spend though, but take more time to actually make sure it is an investment piece. I just bought 45 dollar Balenciaga pants at the BArneys warehouse sale and a 125 dollar Chloe dress at the Intermix sale. I've decided to let go of the yearly designer bag purchase though, because it really is superfluous right now. It's kind of atough one for me though, since I have a jewelry business and I depend on customers to buy.

I've been reading Italian Vogues at the Library and avoiding shopping entirely. If it's not food, or a book that I absolutely need, I'm not buying. I've still got shoes that I've never worn in the closet, so it can wait.

Im still spending the same, which never was an extravagant amount anyways. I have more money now than i ever have in my life so i dont have to worry! And i feel like its my responsibility to spend more if possible to make up for those who arent. (i just beleive this in theory, i really dont act on it.)

I'm taking the opportunity to stock up on vintage pieces, especially the smaller stores where I know I can get good deals. When I get more money I will splurge maybe on one great buy, and I can always mix the vintage with the rest of my already neglected wardrobe!

I have definitely been more careful with my money. However, as a college student I certainly didn't have much to begin with. But I now look for sales like 4 dollar flats at Old Navy and 30 dollar 7 For All Mankind jeans at a consignment shop. Before this I wouldn't have batted an eye at a pair of jeans for 150.

I Ebay like a crazy person. I love to shop and I go to h&m for trendy basics. I also love thrifting. But ebay, Oh ebay, how I love thee.

I have been noticing so many more sales and I have taken advantage of those. Even though for me I haven't really been affected by the recession, I have been careful not to buy too many overpriced and try to be more conscious about it.

Good luck on your paper! it's an interesting subject.
