Summer Internships for High School Fashionista

Mar 05, 2009 @ 7:57pm

cher horowitz was a very aspirational high school student.jpgHey friends,

I read this blog religiously, and I was hoping you guys could help me out with where to start with internships.

I would love, love, love to intern this summer to get experience and just learn and soak up everything I possibly can in the fashion industry.

Any information would help!

Thank you so much!

hi!

here's the thing, because i want to be totally honest: it's really, really, really hard to get an internship in fashion (or anywhere, possibly) while you're still in high school. unless, of course, you know someone. so my first advice for you would be to work any contacts you may have. you may think you don't have any, but you should ask around, ask everyone you know (not just parents, but friends' parents, teachers, teachers friends/siblings/kids, neighbors - i really do mean EVERYONE). once the word is out, you'd be surprised what might get back to you. my other advice, would be to get as much work experience together as you can. when i got my first internship, i didn't know anyone in the industry, but i had a resume with several years of work experience (as a waitress) which helped to make me look like hard worker, and someone willing to really get up and go every day. also - but this is ONLY if you think you really do want to work in fashion - i would suggest going to college in a big city, especially NYC. internships are much easier to come by in new york, once you're a college student, which is exactly how i did it.

i hope that helps a bit!

thanks so much
i have a feeling i'm going to have to start locally, like you suggested
i live in nj, so nyc is only a train ride away
i've done parsons/ fit summer/saturday precollege programs since fifth grade which is like six years so hopefuly that'll give me something and i do have a job.
fashion is my life, and there is noting more i would want to do than have a career in it. thanks so much for your advice,
i'm going to compile a resume of my achievements in school/work as well as the the parsons thing, hopefully that'll get me somewhere?

i would be happy just doing solely coffee runs just to get closer, like i would kill to just be making copies.
i guess i'll just have to wait a little longer to be jenny humphrey.
merci beaucoup!

Hi, I wrote about this subject on my blog. Even though it's written from a British perspective you might find some of the tips useful. I have answered lots of the comments in detail as well:
