Spring in Londontown

Apr 01, 2009 @ 9:01pm

please buy me these pants.jpgHello everyone!

I'm fairly new to Fashionista, so I don't know if this has been asked before and I'm super sorry if it has.

Anyway, I'm heading to London at the end of May and I need some shopping suggestions. I know about Topshop, Harrod's etc but I want to know about lesser known stores. Like the best vintage spots and where to buy cool unique jewelry or up and coming designers that haven't hit Chanel prices.

Also, I know that wearing jeans in Italy pretty much pegs you as a tourist, but what about London? Are jeans cool?

Thanks!

I was just in Italy and lots of people wore jeans, so you shouldn't have to worry about that. Same goes for London. Although, it can get pretty hot in the summers.

I would do my best to snag up some Luella while you're in London. Her line isn't sold anywhere in the US, not counting Net-a-porter. Also, try Camden Market for the jewelry. I've gotten some cool handmade pieces there. Plus, you get to haggle!

skip spitalfields its well touristy, go to brick lane and check out beyond retro, absolute vintage, and rokit..easiest way to get there is either liverpool street or old street stations... wearing jeans is totally fine. camden has cheaper vintage but its less sorted through than east london. go online and look for sample sales because there are usually loads. go to portabello market for some good clothes as well..check out tatty devine for jewelry...

I think wearing jeans in Italy should be fine, as I saw quite a few Italians wearing them last time I was there. However, what I did see on like 99% of Italian women (not the tourists mind you, they had the typical shorts and white sneakers and a camera) was white linen pants worn with a white thong that was showing in a very obvious way. But maybe I was in the non-stylish section of Italy (it was out in Tuscany, not Rome or Milan). Although I suppose if you found pants like that, that didn't expose your underwear it might be ok?

oh, I'd also like to note that the last time I was in Italy it was 2003 or so, so maybe they don't have that issue with their pants anymore. Also, check stylebubble.typepad.com for cool ideas on where to shop, she lives in London and has really unique style so if you browse around her blog a bit I'm sure you'll find something

def check out beyond retro and rockit which are in bricklane but also near covent garden. if you are there on a saturday, go to portobello road early to find some nice trinkets & jewelery. there are also loads of boutiques in notting hill. All Saints is good for vintage looking tees and abstract shaped skirts & dresses. the more you mix and match, the more london you'll look- bold colors and prints.

Go to Browns on Molton. love it more than Harvey Nicks. and I adore Liberty print scarves. And Hoxton Boutique (in Hoxton), if you want to venture into real London.

Hi,

OK Firstly for Vintage you have Beyond Retro which is just behind Oxford Street and they are fab at 80's oversized Jumpers, Cowboy boots, cheap bags and great Menswear finds. http://www.beyondretro.com/
For Jewellery, I just don't think you can beat Camden Market(just after the Bridge on the left hand side Near Starbucks) you have loads of stalls that do great silver rings and necklaces. Whenever I buy something from there I get loads of Comments.

And Jeans? One Word RIPPED! Topshop have some great ones that are white or bleeched blue and I know H&M have some great ones too! Wear with your Gladitators and you'll look Sweet!

It's definitely ok to wear jeans in Italy! Not all Italians are extremely stylish (contrary to popular belief!) Just wear them with a put together look and you'll be fine, but I can guarantee you will still be a noticeable tourist no matter what you wear! Trust me, I lived there and it becomes very obvious, regardless of what the person is wearing!

I would advise to stay away from more of the well known areas if you want unique clothes that arnt topshop/h&m. Camden is good if your willing to put a good few hours into looking through the vintage shops, brick lane is a must, but the best is going on a weekday when there are some fanatstic gold and silver vintage jewlary. My advise for clothes would just be pretty dresses and fitted shorts with less fitted tops, it should be pretty nice weather because its 20 degrees now, but less is more its my rule. Jeans are more than accepted in london, but might be frowned upon in italy depending on where your going, i tend to go there most summers and find its way to hot for jeans unless they are shorts anyway.

All these suggestions are good. I know B Store is excellent . . . Liberty is one of the prettier stores I've visited but my favourite secret: The Office outlet store on St. Martin's lane. Not to be missed.

for vintage - head to brick lane (beyond retro, rokit, absolute vintage) or check around the outskirts of covent garden.

for highstreet - don't be afraid to walk further up places like oxford street to the less busy ends
try covent garden - touristy but full of different shops, more preppy - head up floral street for mulberry shop.

for designer - new bond street can't be beaten, then saville row - just to look :)

You absolutely must go to Liberty! The store is gorgeous and the displays are so pretty. Snag yourself a real liberty print scarf before you head home!

All these suggestions ARE good.. you'll love London because everyone has such individual style - anything goes, truly. Jeans are fine, one thing it seems everyone's wearing this week are faded blue jean short shorts - cuffed - over black tights with interesting shoes or boots. It's almost warm enough that I'm seeing a few instances of shorts without tights. I agree with Moll: pretty dresses and fitted shorts with less fitted tops are your best bet, but if you feel happier in jeans, go for it! : )

The secret to London style is: be true to yourself, and have fun.

Shopping wise: for an amazing fashion experience, turn off Picadilly, go up Old Bond Street to New Bond Street (or conversely, down from Oxford Street) - just to window shop & see all the designer shops - turn off onto Bruton Street and experience Stella McCartney's shop - a whole town house - and Matthew Williamson. Leave your credit cards at the hotel for that part.
THEN, you're going to love the cheap high street shops like Topshop or at the moment, H&M's just come out with Matthew Williamson's line - super cheap & fabulous. Even tho Spitalfields is well touristy now, it's still worth a visit on Sunday because it's so unique. On a non-fashion note: do not miss Borough Market on Saturdays, for food & fashion tips. Have a fabulous trip!

You def want to hit up Portobella Market on Sunday, it's a must! Also Brick Lane has an excellent market on the weekend (I don't remember if it's Sat or Sun). Oxbow has great vintage, I still have an amazing hat I got there years ago. Camden's great but you have to be prepared to dig. Also Carnaby St. is great, and be sure to walk by Central St. Martins to see the future of fashion.

Yeah jeans are cool - especially laid back, ripped or stonewashed denim. And try Soho for vintage. xxx
