In Need of a Headband or Two

May 07, 2009 @ 1:09pm

leighton wears a pink headband.jpgI'll make a confession: I get more than a little style inspiration from Blair Waldorf.

I really, really love her and would dress like her all day every day if I could. But I live in the real world so I'm content to settle for an extra accessory here and there.

But I'm having trouble finding headbands as awesome and creative as the ones on Gossip Girl. I don't want to spend a ton of money because I want to buy a lot to have on constant rotation.

Any suggestions?

Go to a Claires and buy cheapy headbands the go to a nice creft store and get silk flowers, feathers, buttons fabric, crystals...basically anything that catches your eye. They are SO easy to make cheaply, plus that guarentees that only you will have it!

Anthropologie has some great ones. You can also make your own I suppose. It couldn't be that hard.....

I too have fallen under the spell of Blair Waldorf's style and have become extremely wrapped up in the headband craze.

I have recently come home too many times with bags filled with hair accessories from stores such as Urban Outfitters, H&M and crazy enough Forever 21. I have recently fallen in love with all things accented with bows but most stores have hair pieces adorned with ribbons, beads, flowers and sequins.

At Forever, recently they've been having large sections of headbands and other hair pins, clips and pony holders in a variety of styles and colors (in the larger stores...it varies from store to store). Some of the items are trashy and cheap looking but if you dig through the unorganized mess you can find some unique pieces. The prices are almost too reasonable ranging from 2-6 dollars so you can easily grab three of the same kind in different colors.

At Urban, the pieces are more expensive but also more unique. Feathers and beads are most common and there is a wide variety to choose from in store and online. I recommend flicking through the sale section of the online store to find older pieces that are still in fashion but have been marked down. UO is known for having quality issues with its accessories so don't be surprised if you have to mend your new accessory in a couple weeks with the help of a hot glue gun. I recently found a few cool pieces that reminded me of what they sell at Urban on fredflare.com for a much more reasonable price.

If you are willing to splurge, poke around net-a-porter or shopbop.com for designer pieces that are good quality and unique.

Of course, you can't always find the most unique and detailed head pieces in other stores (such as H&M and American Apparel) but I recommend hitting up a bead or craft store for unique little pieces and having a bit of a DIY moment. That way you can make a little head collage that matches what you want to wear and you can make it as unique as you please. Also, you can easily turn cute ribbons or oblong scarves into headbands for a more boho or vintage vibe.

Hope this helps and good luck!

One great place to check out would be the online store at etsy.com where you can find cute handmade and vintage pieces without the designer cost.

Jennifer Behr is actually one of the brands of headbands that Blair wears.

Also, there's a plethora of Blair-worthy headbands on etsy that you can search for: www.etsy.com. For example:

Hope this helps!

You should check out www.bellebandeau.com! I just launched a collection of ballet-inspired headbands made from pointe shoe materials. They are very unique and affordable :)

Or... make your own! M&S & even Boots probably still sell plain old black velvet 'Alice' bands - and Accessorize is stocking really nice silk flowers, just pin it on that. Cheap, and original.

I've also seen a ton of great things on etsy.com, including this fun Mickey Mouse version:

If u want the actual headbands that Blair wears, your can go to the GG site on the CW and they have some of them listed. Also, most of them come from Barney's, so u can always buy there (some are super expensive, but there is a sale secetion!)

If u live in NY like I do, then i think the best solution is the street vendors in Soho/Lolita. There r several regular vendors down their who sell one-of-a-kind headbnads that they make, which r really cool and only about $15-$25. Or, there is the craft store (if ur in NY, def the fashion district for supplies) & u can make ur own (it is really easy, a girl at my school does it & they r really nice!)

Good luck!!!

why don't you make them yourself?
i posted a great post on my blog about DIY headbands - you should check it out:
http://www.craftwithjackie.com/?m=20090323

using basic craft items, (cheapy headbands, ribbon, fake flowers, feathers, jewels, old earrings/brooches and a glue gun) it shouldn't take you more than 20 minutes to make one!

i always get tons more compliments on the headbands i've made, versus the ones i've gotten at chains like forever 21. plus, this way, they're totally unique and you can guarantee nobody else will have them. i suggest even going to stores or shopping online, and copying ones you've seen or simply use them for headband inspiration!!

i hope this helps!!
you know you love me

I highly recommend Forever21. I have gotten many headbands from there. As well as H&M, and Anthropoligie. Also if you have a Coach outlet near you, they sometimes sell their famous headwraps which are always cute and stylish. In my opinion its worth the $20 for the headwrap. In stores their $40 which is quite expensive, but then again Anthropligies headbands are also quite expensive.
