Trust Fund or No Trust Fund?

Aug 31, 2009 @ 6:24pm

amandahearst.jpgI do not work in the fashion industry but I love reading about the industry on Fashionista.

I remember a comment that mentioned the fact, or not, that the fashion industry is highly subsidized. Rather that many of the people who work in it come from wealthy families who help them afford their lifestyle because the salaries are low.

As an outsider, I was wondering how much of this is true? And if you're willing to comment anonymously, does your family support you and by how much?

Thanks!

Well that depends on what your job is in the industry. If you're on the business side, in PR, work for a designer, etc., most positions are pretty decently paid at entry level, and only get better.I think you could safely say that it's mainly Fashion publications who have staffs comprised of mainly trust-fund girls...most non-masthead positions at magazines pay as little as 20-30k per year...and contributing writers and editors get paid for the work they do, which would be about $2-4 per word. Most people can't live, ESPECIALLY in New York, on that type of salary..never mind be able to afford $1,500 shoes.
