Hats From the Fall 2012 Runways We Hope to See at the Kentucky Derby

Hats From the Fall 2012 Runways We Hope to See at the Kentucky Derby

As everyone knows, the Kentucky Derby is the oldest, most prestigious gathering of preposterously big, totally unnecessary hats in North America.

And while we hear there’ll also be some nice horses running around a track, the part we’re obviously most looking forward to is scoping out what new and crazy heights Derby-attendees will go to with their chapeaux. Luckily for them, the Fall 2012 runways offered no shortage of showstopping toppers from Marc Jacobs’ unforgettable Jamiroquai-inspired hats, to Anna Sui’s goofy knit caps.

Click through for the Fall 2012 hats we hope make an appearance at the Kentucky Derby this weekend.

Anna Sui Fall 2012: Sticking to the Formula

Anna Sui Fall 2012: Sticking to the Formula

You always know what you’re going to get at an Anna Sui show: A star-dotted front row, loads of colorful prints, some funky hats, and smiling models.

Sui’s Fall 2012 show certainly didn’t stray too far from the formula–But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Actually, we have to say that in such a fickle fashion era, it’s kind of refreshing to see a designer stick to what she likes. And in this case, it’s also what she does best.

To wit: The paisley and geometric printed dresses, which ranged in color from turquoise to cranberry, were classic Sui and you need only to glance at pictures of rock groupie goddess Anita Pallenberg to know that they’ll stand the test of time.

Trendspotting: Roaring ’20s

It wasn’t enough that the latter part of New York Fashion Week was dancing the Charleston (well, not literally), or that a select few London shows saw their waistlines drop. Now, Milan has jumped on board the 1920s trend, and that was just in the first day. You may have noticed some vintage-inspired looks at Gucci or even Alberta Ferretti’s light-as-air exits at the beginning of the show.

Filming of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby is underway in Australia and we think designers are getting a little inspired.

Anna Sui Spring 2012: A Forties Fashion Fantasy

Anna Sui Spring 2012: A Forties Fashion Fantasy

This week’s many wild prints, bright colors and feminine silhouettes had nothing on Anna Sui, perhaps because that’s always been what she does best. The vibe at last night’s show was cinematic, decadent and high-energy, with loud disco tunes and dramatic spotlights.

Karen Elson was the perfect show-opener. We hadn’t seen her all week, except as musician-Karen, when she gave us a taste of her undeniable ability to captivate an audience. She did it again last night as model-Karen–we were transfixed by her red curls, bright red lips and a maximalist, fully accessorized look that included a fur caplet, black turban, digitally printed floral shirtdress and pink, red and purple checkered sweatervest. A bevy of superstar models followed like Karlie Kloss, Jessica Stam and Jourdan Dunn. Also, Lindsey Wixson’s gap-toothed, red-lipped smiles were particularly memorable.

Tracy Reese Admits That She’s Still Starstruck When it Comes to Michelle Obama

Tracy Reese Admits That She’s Still Starstruck When it Comes to Michelle Obama

Tracy Reese was feeling nostalgic Wednesday night as she celebrated her flagship’s five year anniversary. “I remember when we had our opening party,” Reese said. “I was trying to put things to bed at the office to get down here for the party but I got here 15 minutes late. Then it turned out that Anna Wintour got here 15 minutes earlier and totally was leaving as I walked in the door! I just still can’t believe I wasn’t there when she got here,” she confessed.

Clearly, Reese has come a long way since her self-described fashion faux pas, with a client list including celebs from Alicia Keys to Michelle Obama. “I still have a total freak out when I see Michelle wearing my clothes,” she said.

Textbook for Fashionista: Edie Sedgwick

Easily one of New York’s most famous icons, Edie Sedgwick made her name in the Warhol era. One of his favorites, she was often spotted at The Factory and starred in several of his short films. In truth, the early part of Edie’s New York life was pretty fantastic and people all over wanted to emulate her style: leotards, chandelier earrings and a generally excessive attitude. However, as her fame spiraled upward, Edie spiraled downward into drug and alcohol abuse. After a tumultuous relationship and her career on pause, she returned to her family in California for some semblance of health and control. Shortly after being married, her addictions got the better of her and she succumbed to an overdose. Still, she’s one of New York’s most cherished style icons. We recommend emulating her wardrobe, not her lifestyle.

You Will Be Able to Buy Those Anna Sui Cat Hats for $205 Come Fall

Anna Sui‘s shows are always a lot of fun because the models smile and the clothes are bright and ’60s and happy. This year Sui’s fall show was extra whimsical because a few models wore these fantastical cat hats down the runway (I thought they looked more like mouse hats but I’ve since been overruled). I figured they were just a show piece, but when I passed by Anna Sui’s booth at the Coterie I noticed the cat hats on display. So yes, fashion cat lovers (of which I am one), the Anna Sui cat hats will actually be available at Anna Sui’s SoHo store and a few other locations (we hear Net-a-Porter is interested, too) for around $205. Don one next fashion week and you’re guaranteed to be immortalized on some street style blog.

Anna Sui Fall 2011: Dapper Dandies in Mouse Hats

Anna Sui Fall 2011: Dapper Dandies in Mouse Hats

For fall 2011, Anna Sui did her usual mod, pop, boho, circus, Portabello Road, Sgt. Pepper thing. But when you’ve got a good thing going, why mess with it? Prints were a swirly, mod and optic, and of course, the requisite paisley. Dresses were mini school girl inspired frocks with Peter Pan collars and floor length boho numbers with peasant blouse necklines. The collection started off black and white and then there were shots of lime green and then every color under the sun followed. Best part? Smiling models (as in Coco, Karlie, Arizona and more superstars) in mouse hats that one-upped Opening Ceremony’s Wild Things collection.

An Evening in SoHo: Sofia Coppola Talks Somewhere and Anna Sui’s Book Signing

An Evening in SoHo: Sofia Coppola Talks Somewhere and Anna Sui’s Book Signing

SoHo was cold and packed with Christmas-crazed tourists Thursday night, but that didn’t keep me from scurrying over to the Apple Store and to Anna Sui’s boutique for two really exciting events celebrating two of fashion’s finest (who also happen to be friends.)

First stop? Apple, to see one of my icons (not just in fashion but in life), Sofia Coppola, speak about her latest film Somewhere, as part of Apple’s Meet The Filmmaker series.

And while Marie Antoinette will forever reign as my favorite of her films (okay, maybe my favorite movie ever?), I have high hopes for Somewhere, which stars one of our favorites, Elle Fanning.

After about an hour of camping out in my chair so that no one else snagged it, Sofia finally walked in wearing a heather gray cashmere sweater scrunched up to her elbows, a pair of fitted blue jeans, and what looked like a pair of Chloe wedges. Her hair was perfectly tousled and the only jewelry she had on was a diamond tennis bracelet and a slim black leather watch.

Sofia spoke about the challenges she faced, the similarities and differences between all of her films, and what inspired her to do Somewhere. “All my previous films had been from a girl’s perspective, so I really wanted to do a film from a man’s point of view.” she said.
