The Top Trends from the Fall 2013 Runways

Four cities, one season: Fall 2013. Nemo kicked the collections off and every city to follow added its own dose of wintry chill. Somehow all that cold weather caused a discernible note of restraint to float through the collections. Don’t worry–the passion and excitement were still there, but designers actively pursued defining new ways we can really dress next fall. These looks felt grounded in the return of the “Lady,” as fashion’s pendulum swung away from the risqué, toward the refreshingly refined (spike-studded shoulders be damned). Check out our top trends for fall in the slide show.

The Top 10 Fall Trends from London Fashion Week

Playing the name game in London is far from easy: So many cool young designers, so many unusual names, and only a week to make sense of them all. It’s largely due to the aversion many Brit design talents have to being crafted into the sort of the fashion celebs we adore stateside. No worries; the clothes spoke volumes for themselves, as London dialed down the quirked, and turned out one of the most sophisticated seasons in recent years. See for yourself!

Ashish Spring 2013

Ashish Spring 2013

The Clothes: If you know anything about Ashish, you know that his collections will invariably involve sequins–and lots of them. This one was no exception. In fact, one oversized t-shirt featured 12,407. Besides sequins on everything, there was also a number print motif. Shirts and sweatshirts were backless, and everything was mismatched and lopsided. London fashion week was a whirlwind of shows, and we had a great time covering them. This is all about the drama. You need a certain amount of self-confidence to pull many of these off, but we encourage you to try!

Ashish: Clash of the Tartans

Ashish: Clash of the Tartans

LONDON–Ashish Gupta’s dripping-in-sequins show always serves up a rollicking close to London Fashion Week. With MIA on the front row and blasting through the speakers, this season more than lived up to the last. Instead of Americana, though, for A/W the Indian designer took a budget cuts-era look at Camden punk.

Spiderwebs on kneecaps were the first things we noticed, followed by holey knitwear, sequined tartan basketball shorts and a union jack vest. The clash of the tartans carried on across cocktail dresses, sweatpants, skirts, etc., all made for the cover of Nylon.

Ashish Plays Cowboys and Indians For Spring 2011

LONDON–Once the last piece of mirrorball confetti hit the floor at Burberry, showgoers blinked their way into the sunlight smiling. It seemed to many that the crescendo of the week would also be a good place to end LFW—but anyone who continued down the show roster to Ashish was in for a treat.

If Giles flew the flag for kitsch Britannia with his show, Ashish answered with a Gaga-‘n-Beyonce “Telephone”-video vision of the glitzy American West. The opening salvo of, “Don’t f**k with me, fellas!” set the tone, telling us to expect to meet a good-time gun-slinger of a gal—someone ready to ride anywhere in her sequin-emblazoned bandanna top.

With the cow-print blazers, oversized paisley basketball shorts and flame-grilled motifs ALL in sequins, as well as boots hand-painted with cacti, horseshoes and McDonald’s and Coca-Cola branding; and even tall Native American headdresses, the show was wild, but that was the point. Ashish always puts on a fun show—the models looked like they were having a great time, and front rowers’ feet didn’t stop bouncing to the tunes through the entire show.
