What to Expect from the Met’s Punk: Chaos to Couture Exhibit

“PUNK: Chaos to Couture,” the latest exhibit organized by Andrew Bolton for The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, opens to the public tomorrow. The press got a first look today. And I have a feeling reactions will be mixed. (The International Herald Tribune‘s Suzy Menkes already panned the exhibit for being too “sanitized and bloodless.”) Here’s why:

Fantasy Dressing the Met Ball Guests
We Play Dress-Up

Fantasy Dressing the Met Ball Guests

The Met Ball is like the Oscars for the fashion industry: all the best people in all the best dresses.

This year’s theme, punk, presents an interesting conundrum: will people go all out, liberty spikes and Givenchy nose rings and all, or just throw some studs on a Chanel suit and call it pseudo-punk?

We’re hoping for the former, and so in the spirit of going the distance, we’ve picked out our favorite punk fashions and paired them with Met Ball regulars like Anna Wintour and Julianne Moore and some fantasy guests (Bjork, anyone?).

Click through to see the looks we want to see on the red carpet, and let us know what you’re hoping for in the comments.

Moda Operandi Makes Met Gala Red Carpet Shoppable

For the first time ever, fashion enthusiasts with deep pockets will be able to shop the designs worn on the red carpet at the Met Gala.

What that means is if you see, on one of the four websites live streaming the Met Gala arrivals at 7 p.m. on the night of May 6 (ModaOperandi.com, Vogue.com, Samsung.com or MetMuseum.org), say, Lena Dunham wearing a Wes Gordon number that strikes your fancy, you’ll be to buy it the next day on Moda Operandi.

The Top Trends from the Fall 2013 Runways

Four cities, one season: Fall 2013. Nemo kicked the collections off and every city to follow added its own dose of wintry chill. Somehow all that cold weather caused a discernible note of restraint to float through the collections. Don’t worry–the passion and excitement were still there, but designers actively pursued defining new ways we can really dress next fall. These looks felt grounded in the return of the “Lady,” as fashion’s pendulum swung away from the risqué, toward the refreshingly refined (spike-studded shoulders be damned). Check out our top trends for fall in the slide show.

Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing Wants to Become Besties with Alexander Wang in Paris

Last night, fashion’s it-crowd–from Karlie Kloss to BryanBoy to Vogue editors like Virgina Smith and Meredith Melling Burke–headed to Harlem for a dinner at Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster. The occasion? A Vogue-hosted fete for Balmain‘s new ‘Pierre’ handbag, made in collaboration with jewelry designer Aurélie Bidermann.

Amid the air kisses and copious amounts of champagne, we managed to snag a few moments with the man of the hour, Balmain designer Olivier Rousteing, who dished (in his adorable French accent) on travelling the globe non-stop, and why he hopes to hang out with Alexander Wang in Paris.

‘Balenciaga Did It First’ Is a Very Accurate and Timely Tumblr

What would fashion be if Nicolas Ghesquiere had never come around? Probably pretty different considering his work for Balenciaga has influenced just about everyone, some more directly than others.

We feel like an entire “adventures in copyright” blog could be dedicated to copies of his work. Oh wait, that exists.

We already knew how influential he was, but seeing that visually, all in one place is pretty incredible.
