The Top Trends from the Fall 2013 Runways

Four cities, one season: Fall 2013. Nemo kicked the collections off and every city to follow added its own dose of wintry chill. Somehow all that cold weather caused a discernible note of restraint to float through the collections. Don’t worry–the passion and excitement were still there, but designers actively pursued defining new ways we can really dress next fall. These looks felt grounded in the return of the “Lady,” as fashion’s pendulum swung away from the risqué, toward the refreshingly refined (spike-studded shoulders be damned). Check out our top trends for fall in the slide show.

Behnaz Sarafpour Fall 2012: Fashion X-Ray

Behnaz Sarafpour’s charm is often in the details, and her fall 2012 collection was no exception. The designer was inspired by the concept of a “fashion x-ray,” using the internal mechanisms of garment construction as embellishments.

Sarafpour explained her decision to embroider silver coiled boning onto dresses. “It contributes to the structure of the clothing but it’s also a design element,” she said. She also used embossed horsehair which she fashioned into skirts.

The delicate lace overlaid on the bodices of some pieces were standouts. The lace was made from metallic thread, sourced at the revered Solstice mill in France. “I’ve been working with them since I was at Parsons—they made lace for me that I used in the project that won me the Golden Thimble,” she told us. “They flew it in on the Concorde, so that will tell you how long ago it was.”

Sex and the City Perfume Exists: And it is the fragrance most confiscated by customs officers. Of 138 commercial perfume shipments the Customs and Border Protection’s Intellectual Property Rights “National Targeting and Analysis Group” monitored in Los Angeles, 52 were busted for the phony SATC scent. Who knew? {WWD subscription required}

Andrej Pejic Was on a Roof in New York: The gorgeous model was spotted shooting with photographer Sebastien Micke for an unknown project. One of the outfits is a very skimpy bandage-style bathing suit. So stunning that it makes us want to stop complaining about having small boobs. {Telegraph UK}

Liv Tyler to Sing INXS Song for Givenchy: The actress will do a sultry rendition of ’80s rock band INXS’s “Need You Tonight,” for the launch of the Very Irrésistible Givenchy Electric Rose fragrance. {WWD subscription required}

American Apparel Eats Humble Pie: The controversial retailer is apparently trying to reach out to Nancy Upton, the woman who mockingly entered AA’s plus-size modeling comp and ended up garnering the most public votes. The retailer, who previously wrote an angry letter to Upton (and crowned a different winner), has once again reached out to the “contestant,” offering to fly her to their LA factory to show the actual roles of women in the company. Wonder if Dov will be on hand for an impromptu photo shoot? {NY Daily News}

Ridiculously Underaged Models Cap Off NY Fashion Week: Fashion week went out with a sort of creepy bang yesterday, as several six-year-olds dressed like sexy cowgirls gyrated on stage at the Bryant Park Hotel in an event hosted by Real Housewife Kelly Bensimon. The clear star of the show was Eden Wood, a pageant vet who’s already won 300 awards. I feel weird now. {NY Post}

160 Years of Bally in 160 Seconds: The classic Swiss brand celebrates its 160 year anniversary with a brief video reflection on its history in culture and advertising. {Bally}
