Fashion Week Scoreboard: Betsey Johnson

I’m not at a sports bar. I’m not eating buffalo wings. It’s a Tuesday night and there are no sports to watch (unless you count dance moms, which I’m DVRing). So I’ve given in and I am AT FASHION WEEK, LIVE!! And I have news for you–it’s a shit show.

No, really. We’re outside Betsey Johnson and this place is out of control.

Summer is almost officially over (we know, sad) and that means that New York fashion week is right around the bend. Like three-weeks-from-now-around-the-bend. Seriously, where does the time go!? Anyway, we had the chance to scour over the week-long event’s calendar and turns out there are some pretty notable changes ahead. From who’s new in Read more →

Your Very Own Vintage Betsey Johnson (Hello Alley Cat!) Could Walk the Runway at New York Fashion Week

Betsey Johnson may have filed for bankruptcy and shuttered her stores, but she’s not going anywhere soon. Earlier this week, Johnson announced that she’d be releasing a lower-priced dress line with the Levy Group and putting on a “retrospective” runway show at New York Fashion Week. So what does that mean? It means vintage Betsey–from Read more →

Betsey Johnson’s Back With a New Dress Collection, Plans To Show a ‘Retrospective Collection’ at New York Fashion Week

Though Betsey Johnson filed for bankruptcy back in April, the designer hardly has plans to fade into the background anytime soon. Actually, it’s just the opposite. (Really, though, did you expect anything less? This is Betsey, after all–the woman is about to turn 70 and never missed a chance to cartwheel down the runway.) Johnson Read more →

25 Women Designers Who Changed Fashion Forever

25 Women Designers Who Changed Fashion Forever

The upcoming Costume Institute exhibit and Monday’s Met Ball honors two of fashion’s most beloved women designers: Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada. But what about the other female names that have helped to change fashion forever?

Recently, Style.com‘s Nicole Phelps noted that in New York fashion today there is a surprising lack of big-name female designers, which begged the question: “Is it easier to succeed in New York fashion as a man?” Phelps certainly has a point: After all, in the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund’s eight year history, the prize has only been awarded to women designers twice.

The dearth of female designers in New York is particularly disheartening, when you consider the important role women have played in shaping fashion’s past and present. From Coco Chanel, to Phoebe Philo, female designers have provided a fresh–and needed–perspective on fashion and in many cases, they changed the industry as we know it.

So, in honor of those women that have blazed the trail in fashion design, we take a look at the 25 most influential female designers, with the help of Parsons’ Francesca Granata and Pratt’s Jennifer Minniti. Click through and get inspired.

Betsey Johnson Isn’t Going Anywhere: The Designer Still Plans to Show at New York Fashion Week, Star in Reality Show

Betsey Johnson’s company announced yesterday that it would be filing for bankruptcy and closing its stores, putting a rumored 350 employees out of work. But Betsey is not going down without a fight: Her brand and aesthetic will live on.

We can still expect to see Betsey cartwheeling down the runway at New York fashion week come September, WWD is reporting. The designer is staying on as creative director of the brand, and will continue designing sportswear, though, as mentioned yesterday, the emphasis will be on her more moderately priced Betsey Johnson line, which has sold much better than her runway collection. WWD reports that aobut 75% of the spring merch will be moderately-priced, and the rest “editorial- and designer-range pieces.”

Betsey Johnson Files for Bankruptcy

Betsey Johnson Files for Bankruptcy

Betsey Johnson LLC, the licensee that operates Betsey Johnson’s 63 freestanding stores, women’s apparel and e-commerce, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, WWD is reporting. Most of the 63 stores will close within the next few week and 350 employees are expected to be let go.

Betsey Johnson herself will stay on as creative director to design the brand’s lower priced Betsey Johnson line, sold in Macy’s and other mass retailers, as well as oversee accessories and other licenses. “I love the moderate price range,” she told WWD. “It is in synch with all the girls who are buying my clothes.”

Jonathan Friedman, Betsey Johnson’s CFO, issued the following statement:

Betsey Johnson Fall 2012: Betseymania

Betsey Johnson Fall 2012: Betseymania

Betsey Johnson’s Fall 2012 collection transformed the Beatlemania culture of the early sixties into Betseymania. You can always count on Betsey Johnson for a self-referential theme.

This collection mixed sixties staples like houndstooth mini skirts, pageboy hats, and mod prints, with Betsey’s signature prom girl dresses. There were a few neon skirt suits that recalled a Cher Horowitz on acid, which I’m still undecided on. The show closed with a parade of models dressed as scantily clad cheerleaders, marching behind Betsey, her daughter Lulu, and her granddaughter.
