And the CFDA Award Winners Are…

And the CFDA Award Winners Are…

The fashion Oscars CFDA awards have wrapped: The Olsens took home the big prize for womenswear for the Row (they very adorably thanked each other); Seth Meyers wore Marc Jacobs’ Met ball outfit (and dared to make a Galliano joke); Garance Dore had folks tearing up when she accepted her award by telling the audience to “take your fun very seriously…[and] maybe one day you will start a revolution”; and John Waters proved the perfect person to pick up awards for both Comme des Garçons‘ Rei Kawakubo (“I wear Comme des Garcons to be fashionable in private…We know how great her clothes look but others just think we’re poor”) and Johnny Depp (“He has fashion balls…he was a pirate Pepe Le Pew way before I met him”). And the industry recognized its finest talents this year.

Without further ado, the 2012 CFDA award winners:

Fashion’s Most Stylish Guys Give Mark Zuckerberg an (Almost!) Hoodie-Free Makeover for Facebook’s IPO

Mark Zuckerberg is having quite a month. The Father of Facebook just turned 28, bought out Instagram for $1 billion and is now facing the most lucrative point in his career: Going IPO on Friday. We’d offer him a congratulatory “poke” but sadly, that option’s no longer available. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the IPO acronym, it stands for Initial Public Offering– meaning that the company will finally be open to stock holders where the likes of Wall Street—-and even you!—- can purchase a part of the social media company.

But with the estimated $100 billion that’s supposedly coming his way, we’re wondering whether the Harvard dropout will invest in a new wardrobe. Will he finally change out of his usual uniform consisting of dowdy college hoodies, sweat-drenched Adidas shower flip flops, and tattered baggy jeans, into something more uh, dapper? Better yet, the question posed is this: Can all the money in the world transform someone from HTML geek to sartorial chic? Fashionistas can only hope!

To give him an extra boost, we’ve enlisted the help of several fashion experts from designers like Carlos Campos, Alan Eckstein from Timo Weiland and Simon Kneen of Banana Republic, to editors from GQ and Esquire, to buyers and the likes to see what kind of advice they’d shed onto Silicon Valley’s hottest star. And regardless of whether he takes our suggestions or not (note to Marky Mark: you really, really should!), happy IPO Day! We’d definitely like to send you a congratulatory poke soon—- this time, live and in-person.

Fashion News Roundup: Madonna Wears Agent Provocateur On Her Single Cover, Coco Rocha to Host a Reality Show, and Kanye West’s Shoes Get Picked Up

Madonna Barely Wears Agent Provocateur on New Single Cover: Along with her droves of loyal fans, Madonna can now count lingerie brand Agent Provocateur as one of her biggest supporters – in the extremely literal sense. No denying that Madge looks gooood on her “Girls Gone Wild” single cover, but we’ve just one caveat: While it’s no secret that some things go south with age, it seems Madonna’s nips have full-on vanished. Life is a mystery… {Telegraph}

Coco Rocha’s New Online Beauty Show: Is Coco Rocha gearing up to be the next model mogul a la Tyra and Heidi? The Canadian cutie is set to host a new online reality series airing this April called Canada’s Best Beauty Talent, which will feature hair and beauty experts competing for a showcase in a magazine spread. You go Coco! {HuffPo Canada}

Downton Abbey Actress Looks Dead in Dominic Jones Jewelry Campaign: Would you buy jewelry from a dead person? Or more specifically, a dead Downton Abbey actress? Dominic Jones seems to think so–his latest campaign features Downton actress Jessica Brown Findlay and model Mary Charteris posing in what could easily be an ANTM shoot challenge inspired by The Others. {Refinery 29}

Billy Reid Fall 2012: A Refreshing Fashion Week Respite
Reviews

Billy Reid Fall 2012: A Refreshing Fashion Week Respite

We always look forward to Billy Reid‘s show as a refreshing respite from the oftentimes monotony of NYFW : At Billy’s show the men in the audience far outnumber the women and it’s the gents, too, that are best dressed; the show started on time and beer–not champagne– was served to show-goers. In short it was everything that so many shows today lack: Unpretentious, fun, and filled with good-looking straight guys.

But just because the atmosphere was laidback, that’s not to say the clothing–or the designer’s skill–isn’t serious. Far from it: Reid’s expert tailoring could be seen as much in the men’s three piece suits and fur-trimmed outerwear as in the women’s belted coats, fitted skirts and smart trousers. Our two favorite looks, at least in the womenswear department, had to be the cobalt blue suit and the tailored black skirt suit with cobalt pocket square. The fabulously wide-brimmed floppy hats were also a welcome addition to the collection.

10 Questions For It’s a Brad, Brad World

1) How did Brad come from such a quiet, mild-mannered family?

2) While we don’t doubt it will be fascinating, is Brad a little too young to be writing his memoir?

3) Re: Brad telling his memoir co-author about his struggles with being accepted by his family and dangerous use of drugs and alcohol–How does Bravo get its reality stars to share such vulnerable moments on television?

4) Have you heard of a blackout cake? We haven’t but they sound good.

Alexander Wang Designs an $85 Spilt Coffee T-Shirt for Starbucks: Would You Buy It?

Alexander Wang, Sophie Theallet and Billy Reid have each won a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award in the past three years, and the talented designers are no doubt in high demand for collaborative projects. So who has the powerhouse trio decided to partner with? None other than coffee-giant Starbucks.

In one of the most unlikely collaborations we’ve ever heard of, Wang, Theallet and Reid have all designed limited-edition tees in celebration of Starbucks’ 40th birthday. Each tee will be sold in-stores as well as online and, like everything else Starbucks produces, they will feature the instantly-recognizable logo of the brand (albeit slightly hidden).

Billy Reid Spring 2012: From the South to Seventies Southern California

We’re growing to love Billy Reid’s presentations because they always tell a story–and this season, we couldn’t help but remember the lauded designer’s own inspiring narrative. Billy, who you may know as the most recent CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner, actually won CFDA’s Best New Menswear Designer award in 2001 as William Reid. His company, like many, hit hard times in the 9/11 aftermath, forcing him to close up shop and head back south to Alabama, where he started over.

Now, 10 years later, Billy is one of fashion’s shining stars. His presentation last night drew a crowd so huge I could barely see the models. To get to the front, I ended up having to nudge my way through the beer-clutching masses and the whole experience reminded me of being at concert. Turns out, I was. Behind the models, and an absolutely gorgeous set of hanging candles and tree branches, was a full band, rounding out the late night outdoor concert vibe of the Milk Studios space.

“Our friends who are playing music tonight, really they became the inspiration,” Billy told us.

A Barbecue Block Party, Billy Reid Style
People & Parties

A Barbecue Block Party, Billy Reid Style

Nothing says summer like a barbecue block party. And despite the uncharacteristic gloom on Saturday evening, Billy Reid‘s 9th annual Big Apple Bar-B-Q Block Party held at his flagship NY store on Bond St. was in full swing, packed with dapper dudes, stylish ladies, and of course, loads of free booze and delicious BBQ snacks.

The thing we love about Billy Reid‘s bashes is how decidedly un-fashion they are: Burly men slurp up queso unabashedly, women are sporting wingtips instead of stilettos, and there wasn’t a single champagne flute or tuna tartar platter in sight. Most notably, though, is the general feeling of friendliness that Billy Reid, the man, exudes, and which can’t help but permeate the entire party, free margaritas or not (though, of course, the margaritas, basil-lemonade, and delicious slow roasted pulled pork tacos, courtesy of Jim ‘N Nick’s, didn’t hurt!).

Prabal Gurung You Can Actually Afford: See the Designer’s Collaboration For J.Crew

As part of J.Crew‘s partnership with the CFDA, the specialty retailer asked the winner (Billy Reid) and runners up (Prabal Gurung and Eddie Borgo) of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. Billy Reid’s menswear collection for the preppy purveyor was up last month, and now, finally, something us ladies can wear: Prabal Gurung. And for once, thanks to J.Crew’s lower price points, it’s Prabal Gurung we can actually afford. Or at least we can try to rationalize spending $198 on a pair of pants. Because those pants are awesome.

The collection is available for pre-order on J.Crew’s site now, as is a cute photo collage of Gurung’s mood board for his collection, which is comprised of silk blouses, a suit, a dress and a pair of tuxedo pants, and is overall bow-happy but in a good way. Prices range from $198 to $450 and we suggest placing your orders ASAP as the collection is extremely limited–only 50 pieces were produced for some items. Take a look.
