Apparently, Recessions Make Rich People Want to Spend More: Here Are 10 Handbags That Cost Five-Figures

With recessions and economic uncertainty plaguing retail all over the world, you would think products like $39,000 handbags wouldn’t do so well, right? Wrong. Apparently, the luxury market has been doing so well it’s spawned a new market: hyper-luxury.

Instead of tightening their belts, wealthy shoppers are just raising their standards, according to WWD. People want to invest (if you can call it that) in extra special things, even if that special touch, whether it’s an exotic skin or customization, makes the item that much more expensive. And designers like Fendi, Tom Ford and Victoria Beckham are more than happy to cater to those people.

Alber Elbaz puts it nicely: “If a handbag is the price of a house,” he says, “the customer wants to make sure she’s the only one who’s got it.”

Are these things expensive enough for you, luxury customers?

Textbook for Fashionista: Amanda Brooks!

If you’re familiar with Barneys New York–one of the city’s, nay, the world’s, best department stores–then you ought to be familiar with Amanda Brooks. Ms. Brooks, the fashion director, is a somewhat new addition to Barneys, having joined in February. Prior to her position uptown, Ms. Brooks worked as brand consultant for everyone from DvF and Roger Vivier to Chanel and Tod’s. She’s most certainly wise in the ways of fashion. But if that’s not clear from her resume, then just take a look at her personal style–she’s got a closet that makes any editor jealous. Brooks has already done quite a few interesting things at Barneys–see Daphne Guinness, Carine Roitfeld for proof–and we’ll continue watching her work at the Madison Avenue landmark closely.

All the Looks From Emma Watson’s Final Harry Potter Press Tour

Emma Watson basically can do no wrong with her style choices, as she’s proven time and time again on and off the red carpet.

As if I wasn’t already amped enough for the final Potter film on Friday, Watson’s looks from the premier circuit are making me swoon. She’s already made me want to be a wizard and crop my hair, and now she’s awakened my childhood desire to be a princess with some seriously show-stopping full-skirted strapless gowns. She even looks good in sparkly makeup! The girl has to be magic. My midnight-showing dress-up plans are all going awry; do I stick with the hat and glasses and eyeliner-drawn lightning bolt scar, or try and find my own imitation gilt Bottega Venetta ball gown? Decisions.

Check out Watson’s looks from the red carpet premieres, photocalls and press appearances while she promotes the final Potter installment. Which look is your favorite?

CK One Does Separate Fragrances for Men and Women (Plus: Bottega Veneta’s First Fragrance Costs $395 and a New Scent from Balenciaga)

In case you had any doubts that fragrance is a huge category for designers, put them to rest. WWD is chock full of news about new and reformulated designer fragrances today.

CK One Shock: Calvin Klein created the now-classic ck one in the 90s, when at the time it was revolutionary to do a unisex fragrance. Now, of course, tons of designers are releasing fragrances that can go either way. In a move that seemingly defies everything that ck one stands for, Calvin Klein is releasing separate ck one fragrances for men and women. Called Shock, and printed with neon graffiti-like lettering on the bottles, they’re meant to appeal to a younger demographic, 18-24 year-olds. The original is currently a staple with the 35 to 45 year-old set, proving that people really don’t change their fragrances all that frequently. Steven Meisel shot the ads under Fabien Baron’s creative direction. They’ll feature hip young things Lara Stone, Alice Dellal, Ian Mellencamp, Ruby Aldridge, Sky Ferreira, and others. It launches at the end of July and the collection will retail from $14 to $65.

The Little Trend That Could: A Look At How Color Blocking Dominated the Resort Collections

If you’ve flipped through any fashion magazine this past spring, it’s safe to assume that you would have come across an editorial featuring color blocking. Now that the resort 2012 collections are coming to a close, it’s become obvious that this trend is not going anywhere–in fact, it seems to be more popular than ever.

More specifically, we’ve noticed it on countless short dresses. And why not? Resort collections seem like the perfect place for fun, easy, and colorful clothing. In fact, many of the looks show few additional accessories, presenting them as ideal for simple, no-fuss dressing.

Whether through fringe, fabric or sequins, expect to see plenty of color-blocking in the next year. Click through to see highlights from the resort collections.

Bottega Veneta Fall 2011: Control and Passion

Bottega Veneta Fall 2011: Control and Passion

MILAN–The first thing you noticed about Tomas Maier’s fall Bottega Veneta collection wasn’t the Tippi Hedren-style French twists, or the the light, bright overcoats. Instead, it was the tufts of leather sticking out from the label’s classic basket weave handbags. These roughed-up styles illustrated what Maier believes to be the crux of this collection. “We wanted to push the boundaries, to experiment with technique and craftsmanship to an extreme degree,” he said in the show notes. “The result is very particular, with a mix of control and passion that I think reflects the mood of the moment.”
