Fashionista Week In Review: YSL Rebrands Under Slimane, Kate Upton Takes Over the Internet and the Best of Resort, Part Two

Saint Laurent Paris Does The Timewarp: On Wednesday, we reported that Yves Saint Laurent might be dropping the “Yves” as a means of rebranding the label under the direction of Hedi Slimane, and the very next day the storied fashion house confirmed, sending countless tweeters, bloggers and writers into a tizzy. We, on the other hand, started to think about what would happen if other design houses were to do the same.

Kate Upton’s Busy, Busy Week: The busty blonde graced the cover of GQ (which coincidentally channeled Azealia Banks in her latest music video for “Jumanji”), spoke onscreen about her love of America (and large breasts) and even taught Jimmy Fallon how to Cat Daddy. How’d she do it all? With some seriously genius self-marketing skills.

Asian Beauty Products That Might Just Save Your Skin: Okay, so maybe they won’t save your skin, but they’re certainly bizarre and intriguing enough to warrant a test-run. From charcoal shampoo to a chin contour mask to collagen-boosting marshmallows, we’re curious to see what will be first to hit the shelves of Sephora first (or, alternatively, be banned by the FDA).

Model-Turned-Actress, Everybody’s Doing It: Models are good looking people, and so are actresses. Actresses appear on magazine covers, and so do models. So it makes sense that models might whet their palates and give acting a try, right? Right. We rounded up the many, many models who have transitioned from runway to silver screen and analyzed how seamlessly and successfully they made the jump.

Carven Brings the House Down at Pitti Uomo with a Waiter Race, Marching Band, and Feast Set in a Soccer Stadium

FLORENCE–It’s hard to know where to begin to describe the presentation Carven put on last night as Pitti Immagine Uomo’s guest menswear designer because so. much. happened. But to start I’ll say this: It’s the most fun I’ve ever had at a fashion show. And I’ve been to a lot of them. Here’s why: Fashion Read more →

Carven’s NYC Store Location Revealed

FLORENCE–Yesterday we broke the news that beloved Parisian brand Carven plans to open it’s first store outside of Paris in NYC. And now we know where. Carven designer Guillaume Henry told us last night that New York’s own Carven will go up sometime this fall (presumably after Paris fashion week–so in late October) on Mercer and Grand, the former site of a grocery store. A chic upgrade, to be sure.

Carven Plans To Open Stand-Alone Store in NYC

FLORENCE–At this morning’s press conference in advance of Carven’s presentation as the guest menswear designer for Pitti Uomo, designer Guillaume Henry let some very good news slip: he has plans to open a stand-alone Carven store in New York “soon.”

How soon, Henry wouldn’t say. But we’re hoping “soon” means within the year. As fans of the brand, we’re excited by the news but not totally surprised.

Best of Resort 2013: Part Two

Even more great resort collections have trickled in since our first roundup. From Jonathan Saunders to Rag & Bone to Celine, that 70s psychedelia trend is still there. But there are also some subdued, laid back, classic pieces that are more feasible for day-to-day life in the resort months (for those of us who don’t Read more →

Carven Time Travels To Swinging London for Resort, Unveils New Collaboration

We’ve yet to walk away from seeing a Carven collection without wanting everything. Resort 2012 is no exception. Designer Guillaume Henri told us the playful, colorful collection was inspired by Peter Schlesinger’s A Checkered Past, a photo book documenting the ’60s and ’70s in London (which we now want–you can buy it here). “The photos Read more →

Fashion News Roundup: Calvin Klein’s Boyfriend Gets Busted, John Varvatos Shuns Fashion Star‘s Shenanigans, and Bill Cunningham is Honored by Carnegie Hall

Calvin Klein’s Baby Boyfriend Drama: Twenty-two-year-old ex-porn star Nick Gruber, who shares a suspiciously similar hairstyle and skin smoothness with his 69 y.o. designer beau, was arrested yesterday on charges of assault, resisting arrest, and cocaine possession– in that order. It seems the law has come between him and his Calvin. {NY Post}

UGG Opening New NYC Flagship: After the apocalypse, the only things left will be rats, Cher, and Uggs. The fuzzy boot retailer, which continues to expand against all the fashion faux pas odds, will open a 2,500-sq-foot store in NYC’s Meatpacking District this fall. {WWD}

John Varvatos Doesn’t Fancy Fashion Star Theatrics: The Fashion Star mentor isn’t very into the ridiculous shenanigans that explode onstage during the clothing presentations on his reality show. “If the show continues to go on,” he’d apparently like to see less of these distractions. Hold on– if? IF?? But what on Earth would we do on Tuesday nights without this glorious, fashion forward, relevant celebrity-driven concoction of a series? I can’t bear the thought. {BuzzFeed}

Pitti Immagine Uomo Names Carven as Next Guest Designer

Here’s another reason to look forward to Pitti Immagine Uomo in Florence this June (besides the hordes of well-dressed cute boys who will be in attendance): Carven‘s Guillaume Henry has just been announced as guest menswear designer.

“Carven is one of France’s historic labels,” Lapo Cianchi, Pitti Immagine director of communications and events, said in a statement. “And now, with Guillaume Henry as artistic director, it is enjoying a new burst of strength…We are very pleased that [Henry and Carven] have accepted our invitation.”

Considering past guest designers have included Valentino and Rodarte, the new gig is certainly an honor for the young designer, who has been at the helm of Carven since it’s 2009 revival.
