The upcoming Costume Institute exhibit and Monday’s Met Ball honors two of fashion’s most beloved women designers: Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada. But what about the other female names that have helped to change fashion forever?
Recently, Style.com‘s Nicole Phelps noted that in New York fashion today there is a surprising lack of big-name female designers, which begged the question: “Is it easier to succeed in New York fashion as a man?” Phelps certainly has a point: After all, in the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund’s eight year history, the prize has only been awarded to women designers twice.
The dearth of female designers in New York is particularly disheartening, when you consider the important role women have played in shaping fashion’s past and present. From Coco Chanel, to Phoebe Philo, female designers have provided a fresh–and needed–perspective on fashion and in many cases, they changed the industry as we know it.
So, in honor of those women that have blazed the trail in fashion design, we take a look at the 25 most influential female designers, with the help of Parsons’ Francesca Granata and Pratt’s Jennifer Minniti. Click through and get inspired.
As you’ve probably heard, the biggest fashion story of the past year got resolved yesterday when Christian Dior announced that Raf Simons would take over as artistic director of the house, succeeding John Galliano. The news comes only one month after former Dior Homme designer Hedi Slimane was named creative director at Yves Saint Laurent. Read more →

Paris has been saturated in cobalt blue this week, and while that can be dangerous for your health (no really, cobalt poisoning is a thing), we’re happy to risk a little for the sake of fashion. The powerful hue has made stops at big shows like Céline, Stella McCartney, Balenciaga and Chanel already, making it Read more →
You already know our thoughts on Paris fashion week’s most riveting moments, and though Marc bid us bon voyage at Vuitton only yesterday at the end of our four-week, four-city fashion marathon, it’s not quite over yet. As with our ultimate crib sheets to Milan, London, and New York‘s most well-reviewed collections, we won’t rest until we bring you the bigger picture.
What collections in the City of Light did Cathy, Suzy, Susannah, Sarah, Mark, Tim, Nicole, Alex, Godfrey, and Jessica feel truly shone? Fashionista knows. We’ve parsed all the reviews (we mean that literally) from these and other friends and bloggers for the adjectives and other qualifying bon mots.
From 2D shapes at Comme to the full 360-degree view at McQueen, flash back with us now to see which designers maximized their critical response.
PARIS–Another fashion month over. Though doesn’t it seem like it’s always fashion week?
Anyway, Paris just wrapped and we’re still trying to wrap our minds around all the fashion we’ve taken in over the past nine days. Givenchy had everyone raving, Commes des Garçons had everything thinking, and Stefano Pilati’s final collection for YSL had everyone talking. Kenzo and Carven just made us want to go shopping. Now.
Here are our top 10 collections from Paris fashion week, in no particular order.
Spring merchandise is about to hit the racks, and with the mild winter we’ve had, we are itching to get our hands on some warm-weather goodies. So we all went pretend shopping–which hopefully will soon turn into real shopping.
Picks from our favorite designers, from 3.1 Phillip Lim to Céline are here, as well as a few unexpected products like a new MacBook Air (a business expense!).
Click through to see what Fashionista editors are coveting for spring–not all of it is within our budgets, alas, but we can dream. What are you dreaming of adding to your closet this spring?
Celine is always one of the hottest tickets to score during Paris Fashion Week, no doubt about it–but this season, access to their mini-show was even more covetable. Because designer Phoebe Philo is due to give birth any day now, the house opted for a small presentation with only a handful of (very, very lucky) editors in attendance. The atmosphere was so cozy that famously tight-lipped Anna Wintour couldn’t help but utter, “Can you please ensure all fashion shows are like this?”, according to the Telegraph.
But just because we weren’t there, doesn’t mean we can’t drool over the collection, a continuation of Philo’s signature minimalism, with a sporty-luxe slant for fall. Silhouettes were roomy, but streamlined (though Cathy Horyn called them “soupy”) and the zipper details and rounded shoulders seemed like a nod to sportswear. The colorblocked and striped looks in blue, orange, white, tan and black were Philo at her best and we can’t wait to see that long coat with the leather lapels start popping up in editorials soon.
You didn’t think that first roundup was it, did you? Tons of pre-fall collections have trickled in since then, especially from Europe, and they are good. So, click through for 11 more that we are particularly fond of.
Someone Wrote A Song About Andrej Pejic: “Fashion Boy,” penned by Victoria Aitken is dedicated to the male model, of whom Ms. Aitken is a card-carrying stan: “As a muse to my latest single, Andrej has taken us to territory we haven’t chartered before. I’m absolutely mad about him!” {Vogue UK}
PETA Puts Up Billboard in Garment District: Penelope Cruz casts what we think was meant to be a disapproving eye on the entire garment district, in a black-and-white campaign for the animal rights group. {Racked}
Death by Hair Extensions: While you’ve been worrying about the formaldehyde in your Brazilian blowout, a London woman was rushed to the emergency room after passing out in a nightclub. The cause? Coroners say she possibly suffered an allergic reaction from the wig glue she’d applied to attach her hair extensions. What a tragedy, and a steep price to pay for beauty. {Daily Mail}
