Fashion News Roundup: Tough Times for Ungaro, Date Set for Fashion’s Night Out 2012, and Designers are Putting Dragons on Everything

Ungaro Can’t Catch a Break: It hasn’t been a good start to 2012 for Emanuel Ungaro, which announced that, in addition to not being able to deliver its spring collection to retailers, it also won’t be presenting a fall collection at fashion week and has canceled all appointments for pre-fall. Current owner Asim Abdullah vaguely stated that the brand is going through an “internal reorganization” that will allow for Ungaro to become “profitable in the near future.” Hmm… This seems suspiciously (and perfectly) timed for former Ungaro guest-designer Lindsay Lohan’s 2012 comeback. Coincidence? {WWD}

Fashion’s Night Out is September 6: Yep, it’s happpppennning… Fashion’s Night Out 2012 will be Thursday, Sept 6. Mark your [Blackberry/iPhone] calendars! {Fashionista Inbox}

Christian Siriano’s Bridal Debut: Check out the Project Runway alum’s first bridal design, part of an exclusive collection he’s doing for Nordstrom. While the gown in no hot tranny mess, it definitely looks a bit tamer than what we’re used to seeing from the fierce designer. Here’s hoping he goes all out on the rest of the looks. {Glamour}

The Muppets Premieres Tomorrow So We Recast the Movie With the Muppets’ Fashion Doppelgangers

Last night we had the pleasure of attending a pre-screening of The Muppets, which officially opens tomorrow (many thanks to Bliss Spa for the mani and movie!) Anyway, it was brilliant. The producers of this flick are obviously big fans of the Muppets, and they’ve treated their subjects with complete affection, and tossed in a heavy dose of nostalgia (try not to cry during the Piggy/Kermit “Rainbow Connection” duet). The humor is cheesy, but with a clever wink at the audience, and the celeb cameos are inspired. Emily Blunt reprises her The Devil Wears Prada role as the snarky fashion assistant (albeit with wackier hair) to Mlle. Piggy, who is a plus-size editor at Vogue Paris. How controversial. Anyway, we won’t spoil the sweet moments of the movie. You should go stand in line and see it first thing tomorrow.

The protaganists go through a bit of angst in the middle of the film and sing a song called, “Am I a Man or am I a Muppet?” Why choose? We think there’s a little of both in all of us. So, to that end, we present our favorite Muppets and the fashion people who could play them. Or vice versa.

Ten Questions for Project Runway: The Finale

Ten Questions for Project Runway: The Finale

1. Where did they find these miniature workroom tables? No wonder everyone’s cutting patterns on the floor!

2. Uh, who actually wants their hair to look like patent leather?

3. Why can’t they fight over model castings like the designers used to do in Project Runway’s golden era?

4. Instead of breaking for two hours before heading to Lincoln Center, why couldn’t the designers just work through the night? That’s kind of how it works in real life.

Christian Siriano Spring 2012: Coral Fixation

Christian Siriano Spring 2012: Coral Fixation

There’s no doubt that “fierce” former Project Runway winner Christian Siriano has done an admirable job of working his flair for the dramatic and utter quotability (not to mention that reality TV recognition) to his advantage. In addition to earning celeb fans like Victoria Beckham and Christina Hendricks and rolling out shoe collections for Payless, the pint-sized mogul was one of the first designers to master the Twitter game. But despite his likability, many of the intricate evening dresses for which he’s known are, in the words of his Runway mentor Tim Gunn, “a lot of look.”

Eight Seasons of Project Runway Contestants Design Fake Wedding Dresses For Kate Middleton

Eight Seasons of Project Runway Contestants Design Fake Wedding Dresses For Kate Middleton

How crazy would it be if Kate Middleton announced, “Mondo Guerra (season 8) will be designing my wedding gown.” Yeah, that’s not happening, but Project Runway, which has been on hiatus and is currently seeking contestants for Season 9, enlisted 52 alumni of the show to sketch wedding gowns for her.

This is all to help promote Lifetime’s upcoming movie, William and Kate, which will air on April 18. It is sure to be a tearjerker, and I’m wondering if they’ll actually portray a wedding in the movie, complete with gown. I have no doubt there will be a Princess Di montage/flashback component.

Fashion News Roundup: Beyonce Does Blackface, DVF Releases Vintage Wrap Dresses, And Face Paint at London Fashion Week

Beyoncé Does Blackface For L’Officiel Paris: In what is billed as a “return to her African roots,” Beyoncé agreed to be photographed in blackface and tribal markings for the 90th anniversary cover of L’Officiel Paris. Offensive or not? You decide. Everyone has an opinion. {Jezebel}

Christian Siriano Is Working On A Capsule Collection For Spiegel, Claims He’s “Boring”: As if showing collections in NYC and Paris this season wasn’t enough, Christian Siriano is doing a collaboration with Spiegel in which he creates clothes for “different types of women.” The line launches April 4, and prices will range between $49-$599. When asked how he keeps up with all of his various projects, he says he’s boring and relaxes on the weekends. {Thread NY}

Diane von Furstenberg Releases Vintage Wrap Dresses: DVF has been in the news a lot the past few weeks for her criticism of Michelle Obama, her recent skiing accident, and apologizing for using underage models. But let’s remember why she’s so famous in the first place: those timeless, flattering wrap dresses. This week she’s releasing dresses and tops in multiple lengths in vintage DVF prints. {Stylelist}

Inside Fashion Week: The Good the Bad and the Swag So Far

Inside Fashion Week: The Good the Bad and the Swag So Far

To use one of our new favorite phrases, Fashion Week is “many things.” Too many in fact, to capture in one blog post. But can we try? Day three is already here but we’re still poring over the hits and misses of day one. Here’s our take:

The Wigs at Gary Graham: We got his vision for the clothes. But the beauty notes lost us at hello. What were those wigs? No, seriously. What were they?

The Front Row at BCBG:
Yet again, just as much to look at off the runway as a laundry list of “celebs” from Kelly Rowland to Jennifer Love Hewitt perched on the front row.

Wellies at Organic by John Patrick: Rainy days just got an upgrade with these to-die-for lace up rain boots.

Swimwear at Norma Kamali:
We are too delighted that Kamali showed on the runway to complain about anything. But if we did, it would be to ask how those unforgiving cut-outs would translate on real women.

Christian Siriano Fall 2011: Black Orchids And Murderous Shoes

Christian Siriano Fall 2011: Black Orchids And Murderous Shoes

The shoes at Christian Siriano’s show were killer. No, that’s not a compliment. They nearly killed at least four models. One girl took a tumble and multiple others tripped, faltered, or stumbled; one was so completely irritated by them that she took them off during the finale walk in a huff.

But how did the clothes fare? Black orchids were the inspiration, and they appeared throughout the show as prints and later in 3D incarnations.

The first half of the show brought a fair amount of restraint. Tweed, leather, and chiffon somehow mixed effortlessly in a palette of grey and black. An occasional asymmetric panel appeared on dresses and skirts, but nary a huge pouf or exaggerated ruffle was to be seen. Snug turtlenecks were paired with some pretty fabulous trousers with over-sized cuffs. A maxi tulip skirt with a simple turtleneck was the best look in the show. Has Christian finally nailed sportswear?

Ten Questions For Project Runway

Ten Questions For Project Runway

1) In a challenge inspired by New York City, the designers chose the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge? I’m not suggesting the Upper West Side as inspiration, but how cliché.

2) What was the point of the Mandarin Oriental scene? It made me want champagne. There was too much filler on the show this week.

3) Speaking of filler, was that the longest Garnier commercial ever? In the middle of the show?

4) Did Gretchen deliver her most passive aggressive comment to date? “Michael C reminds me of myself five years ago.” What does that mean? When you had more humanity and a sense of humor, Gretchen?
