New York Fashion Week Spring 2012 Beauty Roundup: 10 Runway Looks You Should Not Try At Home

Most of the beauty looks this season were minimal, natural, and quite pretty and wearable (well, except the wet mullets). But those aren’t fun to look at, are they? No, we don’t think so either.

So please click through to see the 10 looks that we never hope to see on someone in the subway at three in the afternoon but that we loved seeing on the runways.

The CFDA’s Teaming Up With Lexus, Julie Gilhart, Loomstate and Parsons to Recognize the Industry’s Most Sustainable Designers

The bizarre partnership between the CFDA and Lexus is back for the second annual CFDA/Lexus Eco Fashion Challenge. Last year, we went to the event where CFDA members Monique Pean, Costello Tagliapietra and Maria Cornejo were announced as the honorees and given $25,000 each to help fun their shows or presentations. The CFDA hopes to continue to encourage and promote sustainable practices in the fashion industry by honoring another round of sustainable designers this September.

Charlotte Ronson, Vena Cava and Costello Tagliapietra for Uniqlo

Charlotte Ronson, Vena Cava and Costello Tagliapietra for Uniqlo

We already knew Vena Cava was designing a capsule collection for Uniqlo–designers Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock let that juicy tidbit slip at Fashion Group International’s panel on entrepreneurship back in February. But today brings word that New York designers Charlotte Ronson and Costello Tagliapietra will also be among the nine collaborators taking part in the Japan-based retailer’s Designers Invitation Project (the others are Zechia, Tiny Dinosaur, Suzuki Takayuki, Theatre Products, Nine and Double Standard Clothing).

Each designer will produce a six-piece capsule collection for Uniqlo, with each item retailing for just $29.99 WWD is reporting. Costello Tagliapietra’s collection hits stores on April 21, Charlotte Ronson’s on May 5, and Vena Cava’s on May 12. The collections will be available through May 21.

Ronson’s collection–the only collection we’ve seen glimpses of–has a casual nautical feel that’s making us crave warmer temps.

New York Fashion Week: The Best Beauty So Far

New York Fashion Week: The Best Beauty So Far

So we’re only halfway through New York Fashion Week, but there have been enough interesting beauty looks that a recap is in order. It’s a bit early to call trends yet, but orangey lips and strong eyes (not together!) are still having a run. As far as hair, we’ve seen just as much textured, messy hair as we’ve seen middle parts with stick straight locks. And nails are all over the place, but an early prediction is slate grey and deep burgundies will rule next fall.

Click through to see our favorite beauty from NYFW so far. We’re not suggesting that all these looks are wearable, but they’re definitely cool.

Costello Tagliapietra Fall 2011: Jackie O, Circa 1970

Costello Tagliapietra Fall 2011: Jackie O, Circa 1970

It’s hard to dislike Costello Tagliapietra‘s easy dresses, but this season it was virtually impossibile. With blown out coifs and coral lipstick, the lady’s looked unbelievably Jackie O-like in wool crepe. The duo’s draping skills were used particularly well in a billowing white blouse paired with pegged orange pants. And the final look, a slinky yellow silk number, was elevated by a peach lining.

Last Night’s Party: Lexus and CFDA Award the Three Most Eco-Friendly Designers

We’re not sure whose idea this was, but the collaboration between the CFDA and Lexus is certainly a bizarre one. Regardless, their goal is definitely one we can get behind. They established the inaugural Eco Fashion Challenge as a platform to recognize and support the industry’s leaders in sustainable design. From the press release:

“To qualify as a finalist, each designer had to demonstrate a commitment to ecologically responsible design and production practices, with a minimum of 25% of their collection being produced in an environmentally friendly manner. The judges selected the three honorees based on design credibility, business acumen, and eco-commitment, with attention paid to eco fabrics, materials, processes, and packaging.”

Last night, the winners were announced at a packed event dj’d by Fabrizio Moretti of the Strokes. Congrats to Costello Tagliapietra, Maria Cornejo and jewelry designer Monique Péan, who won amongst some pretty stiff competition: Behnaz Sarafpour, Marcia Patmos, Organic by John Patrick, Slow and Steady Wins the Race, Subversive, and Rogan. All ten finalists’ work was shown in gallery style displays with blurbs about what they do to keep their design process eco-friendly.

We also got a chance to congratulate winners Monique Péan, Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra and ask them about the challenge.

Sally’s Styling Seminary: A Stylist’s Role on the Runway

Seeing as how fashion month has just ended, I thought it would be appropriate to write about what a stylist’s role is on runway shows. On some shows, I merely choose shoes for the looks, and on others I am involved six months before the show, from creative conception to the completion of the show. Stylists cover the gamut for a designer by bringing in an outside perspective and fashion expertise of what is relevant, irrelevant and “new.” Stylists are needed on a runway show to edit the looks, ensure the designer is showing the most innovative pieces from a collection and that the hair, makeup, and models are on target with everything else happening in the world of fashion. A great stylist can take inspiration from the designer and translate it into every element of the runway show, from the manicure to the music.

When I am working with a design team from the beginning of the creative process, I can spend the six months before thinking about inspiration, hair, and makeup. It gives me a chance to fully flush out the ideas and details for all of the “creative,” giving the designers much more bang for their buck. Working with a designer and his/her team from the get go creates a more complete picture of the intention of the collection, and helps me figure out how to better style the show. I edit, make recommendations, and style the collection to be relevant to what is going to be happening on the runways. While designers and their teams tend to be in their amazing self-made bubbles, we stylists are out there seeing everything, allowing us to make powerful suggestions for shoes, accessories, and new silhouettes that are truly original.
