StyleLikeU Founders Open Up About the Perks and Perils of Being a Mother-Daughter Team

Lily Mandelbaum and Elisa Goodkind, the women behind online style zine StyleLikeU, might just be fashion’s most well-traveled closet-raiders. They also happen to be mother and daughter.

Here, they share with us what it’s like to work together, just in time for Mother’s Day.

“We’ve been so much about everybody else the whole time,” shared Elisa, “but we recognize that we have a story to tell as well and that, with our relationship, the reason we’re doing this is super deep and personal so that it’s important to also show that to the world.”

Backstage Beauty Brief: Victoria Beckham, Zac Posen and More

We spent our Sunday worshipping at the church of fashion–we dragged our sorry selves out of bed really early to check out Victoria Beckham‘s look at the New York Public Library and lasted all the way until the evening, when we ooh’ed and ah’ed over Zac Posen’s signature elegant beauty look. (Start practicing a gorgeous bordeaux lip!)

Rebecca Romijn on Why Models Should Start Working at 18 and the Downside of Model Alliances

So the big model news this Fashion Week, aside from Karlie Kloss not walking any shows, is that the CFDA’s new guidelines require catwalkers to show proof that they’re 16 or older in order to walk the shows. How this will be enforced, we’re still not sure. Ford has already sent out a statement confirming they are repping models under the age of 16. And it’s likely other agencies are too–and sending those girls out on castings.

Well, after the Cynthia Rowley show last night, we spotted former model and now actress Rebecca Romijn and figured we’d get an expert opinion on the matter.

“I think that models should be 18 or older,” the stunner told us emphatically.

Why?

Cynthia Rowley Fall 2012: Leather and Mullet Hemlines Aren’t Going Anywhere

Cynthia Rowley Fall 2012: Leather and Mullet Hemlines Aren’t Going Anywhere

After three seasons of showing in the official Fashion Week tents, Cynthia Rowley went rogue and held her Fall/Winter 2012 show at the Frank Gehry-designed IAC Building (a.k.a. Diane Von Furstenberg’s husband Barry Diller’s offices or that funky white structure, on the West Side Highway, that looks like an odd snow formation.) But once the show started (roughly 30 minutes late—early by fashion standards), it was pretty evident why the venue choice was kind of genius. The New York-based fashion designer is an art aficionado in her spare time and for this showing, she displayed a pretty impressive black and white mosaic of flat screen live-action video from the catwalk as a backdrop to the actual runway show–a perfect match to the building’s super sleek and modern facade.

The lovely and youthful Rowley can always be depended on for her playful, art-inspired designs and the same can be said for her line-sheets. This time, she listed “mechanics, cobblers, & leathermen”, “women artists making big, strong work” and “Rachel Feinstein’s carriages” as inspirations, plus “Youtube breaks” and “Portlandia clips” as recess activities.

Alexa Chung Likes to Be on the Worst Dressed List and Hates Hair Products

Before habitually late Lindsay Lohan arrived at the Cynthia Rowley Spring 2012 show, all the other celebrities in attendance were patiently sitting in their front row seats. As we scanned the crowd, we came across none other than Brit It Girl, Madewell designer, and glittery Miu Miu boot-wearing Alexa Chung. Since we missed her on the celeb-filled Fashion’s Night Out , we briefly interrupted her friendly convo with writer/man-about-town Derek Blasberg for a quick chat.

Fashionista: So what brings you to the Cynthia Rowley show?
Cynthia is a friend of mine and I’ve never been before. I was intrigued to see this collection and I just think she’s really funny and lovely and I’m here to support a friend.

Cynthia Rowley’s Glambulance has been going around town to fix any fashion emergencies and disasters during Fashion Week. What types have you ever experienced?
