Cynthia Rowley Spring 2012: Arty Flash Mobs and Lindsay Lohan Drama

Prolific fashion designer Cynthia Rowley’s interest in contemporary art (she also runs the online art site ExhibitionA.com with husband Bill Powers) was on full display at her Spring 2012 runway show yesterday evening. The collection, described as “flash mobs of floral and animated shapes” and “the thrill of adornment in forced perspectives”, was like a sartorial version of an art history class.

The line was a mix of abstract watercolor florals, geometric hard angle graphics, and brilliant metallic textures – sometimes commingling together in one look. The canvases for the eye-catching prints were the designer’s signature girly silhouettes–flared mini-skirts and dresses with layered panels (perfect for twirling around), mesh leather separates, silky painted leggings, and tailored tuxedo jackets.

Now, let’s address this celebrity business.

Cynthia Rowley Collabs With Birchbox, Designs Swirly Nail Stickers

Birchbox, the subscription-based service that offers users samples of new, high-end beauty products each month, has teamed up with Cynthia Rowley, who is bringing her own eclectic surf cool to the beauty-obsessed with a limited-edition box designed by Rowley herself.

The case is printed with a pattern of her own design and includes plenty of goodies, from a “life-changing” eyebrow pencil. Honestly, it’s worth it for the box alone–the pattern looks like psychedelic multi-colored liquid and will be an amazing decoration when it’s empty. However, it’s not as if you’re shelling out big bucks; Birchbox is only $10 a month, definitely worth the price of the amazing products you get inside. (Sign up for Birchbox here before June 30 to make sure you get the Rowley-designed package.)

Smell Like Royalty: A Hamburg perfumer claims that the royal family commissioned her to create the official wedding fragrances–one called Catherine that has notes of magnolia and rose, and one called William that’s sporty and direct. The cheesy packaging includes a locket with a photo of the couple. {BellaSugar}

Daphne Guiness Will Get Ready For the Met Ball in the Barney’s Windows: To coincide with the Met Gala in May, Guiness has collaborated with Barney’s for a six-week long window display that will include pieces from her collection of Isabella Blow’s wardrobe as well as from her own, a short film, and performance art, a.k.a Guiness preparing for the Gala in the Madison Ave windows. {Vogue}

Cynthia Rowley Fall 2011: Getting Groovy
Reviews

Cynthia Rowley Fall 2011: Getting Groovy

Perhaps Marc Jacobs is to blame, but ever since the American fashion maestro’s 1970s-inspired spring collection debuted, it seems much of the industry’s been taking cues from the disco decade. Such was the case at tonight’s Cynthia Rowley show, though the looks seen here were more Seventies scholar than Studio 54. Think Marcia Brady meets Electric Lady. Cast in an era-appropriate color palette of mustard, rust, emerald green, and midnight blue, the collection was full of sparkling intarsia knits and crisp A-line skirts featuring daringly high slits. In keeping with the chosen theme, there were plenty of Op Art prints, namely a colorful cubist pattern and another in checkerboard chevron.

Exhibition A: Art You Can Afford

Exhibition A: Art You Can Afford

Last night the Gagosian store uptown fêted Exhibition A, a new project by Cynthia Rowley, Bill Powers, Laura Martin, and Gabby Munoz that aims to bring art collecting to the public at a lower price point. And we’re not talking about Cynthia Rowley Baid-Aids here (though I was wearing one yesterday), I mean museum-worthy works of contemporary art.

Including artists like René Ricard, Hanna Liden, Richard Phillips and Josephine Meckseper, Exhibition A sells special edition prints of works from $100-$500. The company keeps it exclusive by only offering the works for 2-4 weeks and only printing as many works as are purchased, meaning your collecting nemesis can’t snatch up your beloved Mark Borthwick after the sale has closed.

Cynthia Rowley Cuts and Pastes
Fashion Week

Cynthia Rowley Cuts and Pastes

Cynthia Rowley’s SS11 collection had some gaping holes, literally. Skirts, pants, and dresses came with perforated holes revealing the skin underneath. The perforations produced a strange and intriguing effect, particularly on a gray long ruffled skirt, where the strong circles contrasted with the garment’s inherent ease.

Continuing with the under/over concept were sheer tops with opaque stripes and dresses covered hem to hem with cabochons. In the color palette of macaroons, the looks were delectable. Giant, sleek barrettes held the models’ pastel hair in place and enamel bar necklaces added a pop to the models’ necklines.

The best looks were the ones that were not trying hard to be innovative. A mint blouse and trouser was a standout, as was a mango colored blouse with cabochon detailed shorts. Later a black shell with black cabochon adorned pants hit every right note.
