How Big-Name PR Firms Are Helping Young Designers

Today, KCD will host its seasonal open house, where market editors, stylists and other fashion types will be given the opportunity to see the latest collections from the PR powerhouse’s roster of brands—including Givenchy, Chloe and Marc by Marc Jacobs—up-close.

Mostly everyone attends KCD’s press day because it’s filled with great brands that magazines (and, increasingly, websites) want to shoot. That’s why it’s such a coup for three-year-old accessories line Reece Hudson to show its Fall 2013 collection alongside KCD’s clients. As an emerging label, the company can’t afford to pay KCD a monthly retainer for representation. But designer Reece Solomon and business partner Max Stein are mentored by KCD senior vice president of public relations, Renee Barletta, through the CFDA incubator program.

What It’s Like Inside the CFDA Incubator (Hint: A Lot Like College)

We visited the CFDA Incubator (where 10 hand-picked emerging designers are provided with studio space–which they still pay for at a monthly rent–and mentoring for about two years) for a market day during fashion week and kind of didn’t want to leave. There were lots of positive vibes.

In addition to checking out the latest from designers like Timo Weiland, Daniel Vosovic, Whit and Isaora, we decided to try and find out what it’s like to work in a shared space with a bunch of other designers–something designers don’t really do, unless they’re on Project Runway (though Vosovic tells us this is totally different).

Daniel Vosovic Talks Life After Project Runway and Dressing Emma Stone

With celebrity endorsements from perennial best dressed lister Emma Stone and Downton Abbey actress Elizabeth McGovern, and 23 international stores now carrying his eponymous New York-based line, it feels safe to say that Daniel Vosovic is one of the rare Project Runway success stories.

We chatted with the optimistic 31-year-old (who really is as likable as he seemed on TV) about making it as a young designer in the reality of a post-reality show world.

Daniel Vosovic Fall 2011: The Prairie Girl Gets a Gritty Makeover

We spotted prairie girl-inspired looks–think Peter Pan collars, voluminous maxi dresses, and Americana plaid prints–on the fall 2011 runways of Steven Alan, Y-3, Rodarte, Marc Jacobs, and Chris Benz.

Though fashion folk have been stocking up on these styles, it’s undeniable that the trend is pretty man-repelling. Recently, an outfit comprised of a sweater layered over a black maxi-skirt prompted one of our friends to dub us “Amish.”

Luckily, for those of us hoping to give the look an edge and some sex appeal, former Project Runway runner-up Daniel Vosovic imagined what would happen if the prairie girl moved to New York City. The result is his fall collection. We recently got an up close and personal look.
