We Break It Down

The Best Shows from Australian Fashion Week

For a true indsider’s take on Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, which just wrapped last week in Sydney, we asked our friend Alyx Gorman, fashion editor at one of Australia’s biggest lifestyle sites The Vine, (and formerly of Oyster) to break it down for us. You’ll learn about the buzzy new labels down under, who is behind them, and why they matter in Australia.

Check out Alyx’s picks for the best of Australian Fashion Week.

Trendspotting: Sheer Panel Skirts

Showing skin is taking a turn for the demure. London has been chock full of skirts with sheer panelling, a more cautious take on the sheer trend, though no less suggestive. There is certainly no shortage of options, either.

Dion Lee Spring 2013

Dion Lee Spring 2013

The Clothes: An ultra modern collection. Neoprene and leather were worked into 3-d shapes, like “backpacks” that were actually incorporated into tops. Electric blue and orange punctuated the mostly black and white collection. A twisted cut-out plaiting technique (which wowed us in Lee’s resort collection, too) was applied to leather jackets and the back of Read more →

Dion Lee on His Shoe Collaboration with Kanye West: ‘I Didn’t Want to Make a Big Deal Out of It’

It’s safe to say we kind of have a teeny crush on Aussie designer Dion Lee: Besides the fact that he makes sleek clothes for super cool girls, he is adorably charming in person. So when we heard he would be in New York City showing his resort collection, we popped by for a look and to chat with the designer, whose global star is on the rise.

Lee showed for the first time outside of Australia last season in London, where he staged a small presentation for fall. While the Sydney fashion industry was disappointed to have lost him in their fashion week lineup, Lee explained that showing in his hometown would have meant staging three presentations in one year and that he wanted “concentrate on the clothes” instead. He confirmed to us that he’ll be showing again in London in September, but this time it will be a full-on runway show.

Big Names Drop from Aussie Fashion Week as Local Retail Struggles

Mercedes Benz Australian Fashion Week (formally Rosemount Australian Fashion Week) kicked off in Sydney on Monday, but with a schedule that is noticeably absent of some of the country’s biggest industry names.

Dion Lee, Josh Goot both pulled out at the last minute while Camilla and Marc decided not to show after seven consecutive years at the event. Goot and Lee both said the decision had to do with focusing on international collections. “I think it’s important that we consolidate our position, rather than rush into a new collection to show at MBFWA,” Goot said in a statement.

Fair enough.

Kanye West Designed the Shoes for Dion Lee’s Debut London Presentation (And They’re Really Good!)

We attended Aussie designer Dion Lee’s debut London presentation over the weekend, and loved the sexy, modern vibe of it. We liked the shoes, too, but didn’t think much about them again, until we saw an interesting tidbit posted on the Daily Pedestrian: Kanye West designed the shoes with Dion Lee.

Dion Lee’s PR representative confirmed that the shoes are indeed by Kanye, as a special collaboration for A/W 2012. We also read that we just missed Kanye at one of Lee’s continuously looping presentations–he showed up for one of the intimate gatherings to lend his support, according to PagesDigital.

Which leads us to wonder, is Kanye hedging his bets with a shoe design career if he can’t get his fashion line off the ground?
