As you may recall, last fashion week fell on the 10 year anniversary of 9/11. Many designers respectfully paid homage to the tragedy and Donna Karan, designer of quintessentially New York brands, was no exception. When her models hit the runway against a the backdrop of a cab parked in the middle of 26th street, we mentioned the stunt would have been just as fitting had DKNY showed any other day, not just 9/11/11. And we were right. She did the same thing again this season. It was just a little colder this time. Luckily, this was an unmistakably fall collection and she was nice enough pair all dresses and skirts with opaque tights–a realistic decision for a realistic collection.
As the models walked inside from the sidewalk, they looked like they could have been any New Yorker walking in from the cold. That’s what DKNY is all about–cool clothes that real girls can and will actually wear. Favorites included a floral suit that looked strangely wearable, a deep burgundy fur and leather coat and a black figure-flattering off-the shoulder cocktail dress.
Of course, celebrities will wear these clothes too, like Ashley Greene and Nina Dobrev.

Urban Outfitters Removes All It’s “Navajo” Products: The retailer was distastefully selling items labeled “Navajo,” and received a cease-and-desist letter in June from the Navajo Nation, who has a trademark on the name since, you know, it’s their name and all. At yesterday’s DKNY show, it was almost impossible to separate specific 9/11 homage from the urban Americana integral to the brand. Sure, the show notes paid explicit tribute to the tenth anniversary and “the courage, the inspiration, the compassion” of New Yorkers. But as a flock of electric red and blue looks emerged from the unmistakably NYC backdrop—a yellow cab parked in the middle of the West 26th St— it seemed the set, clothes, and music (The Guess Who’s “American Woman”) would have been just as fitting had DKNY showed any other day, not just 9/11/11.
Donna Karan’s sportswear line has forever romanticized New York– it’s in the name, after all–and yesterday’s collection was what DKNY has always been: relevant and smart, never fussy. Those red and blue looks, in eye popping stripes and Marimekko-esque florals, seemed perfectly primed for the city gal who wants to put together a striking look when she really needs to be running to the subway, like, now.
Who’s the latest It Girl everyone in fashion is talking about? Irene! No, she’s not a gorgeous, 5’11 supermodel from the Ukraine, she’s the hurricane that’s been slowly making her way up the east coast. While Irene wrecked serious havoc in North Carolina, NYC was lucky enough to miss the brunt of her force. And, fashion people being fashion people, they had a lot to say about it. Gucci Launches New iPad/iPhone App: Called “Gucci Style by Gucci”, it’s made to emulate a print mag with a “strong editorial focus” and tons of lifestyle and cultural features. Eric Damon Creates NYC-Inspired Hosiery For DKNY: Knee-highs, fish-nets and leopard print can all be found in the eight-piece capsule collection by the Gossip Girl costume designer.
