PARIS–

Dries Van Noten: Mr. Dries Van Noten changed the venue of his show from last season’s sumptuous space at the Musée Bourdelle to an industrial loft, shifting the focus of the collection from a refined and tailored wardrobe to things that are inherently sporty and urban. But he did so without abandoning this fall’s elegant suits and coats, like the Bordeaux wine silk suit worn with an untucked white shirt.

The collection contrasted technology with tradition and sportswear with sartorial construction: this meant a mix of waterproof parkas and silk leggings. There was a yellow parka with the thinness of transparent nylon fabric, a navy hooded long coat worn with tropical wool pants and a tan linen jacket with black nylon stitching. A bonding technique was employed on the outside of parkas and trims of jackets, reinforcing the outlines of the rigid cutting patterns.

The long navy trench belted at the waist, the tan-charcoal-brown striped coats, and the transparent yellow raincoat are sure to be best sellers come spring.

Despite the heavy technical work involved in crafting each outfit, the show was light and airy.

Textbook for Fashionista: Abbey Lee Kershaw

Abbey Lee Kershaw is undoubtedly the blogging world’s favorite model. Indeed, her maxi skirts can be seen on dozens of street-style blogs on the web. If you’re not wise to Ms. Kershaw, permit us to enlighten you. She’s as much a supermodel now as any of the other top girls. Her trademark oh-so-coveted grin and gaze have earned her spots on nearly every top runway in New York, Milan, London and Paris. (Of course, it does help if you’re really tall too.) Off the runway, she sports a unique personal style and we give her credit for rolling in maxi skirts, power shoulder jackets and sweet shoes. Abbey Lee, we salute you: Model on Wayne, model on Garth.

The Best Shoes of Fall 2011

The Best Shoes of Fall 2011

Shoes for fall 2011 came in all different shapes and sizes, from fur trimmed at Wang and Altuzarra to prim and pointy at Celine, Pucci, and Givenchy. The most innovate shoe, however, goes to Jil Sander, where the stirrup pants fit through a hole in the sole of the shoes. While in my dreams I own them all, the pair most likely to be on my feet come fall is Marc by Marc Jacobs’ shearling wedges, because there’s nothing quite as wonderful as a good looking shoe that’s comfortable, tooank” >Wang and Altuzarra to prim and pointy at Celine, Pucci, and Givenchy. Dries Van Noten Fall 2011: Print is Not Dead
Reviews

Dries Van Noten Fall 2011: Print is Not Dead

If last season Dries Van Noten showed restraint with his signature prints, this season he went back to his roots, using them with abandon.

There were swirled zebra stripes, geometric diamonds, zig-zagged lines, Pucci-esque circles, brocades, jacquards, florals, and the list goes on. Prints came first in black and white and then in bright bold orangey reds and cobalt blues. Textures were mixed and matched too–fur lapels were attached to thick printed wool trenches, and sequined fringe shimmered in sqaures on dresses. If the collage of of prints, colors and textures seems dizzying-ly overwhelming, it didn’t look that way on the runway. While last season’s collection may have been more obviously restrained, there was restraint here, too–simple silhouettes like slouchy knee-length silk dresses, below-the-knee skirts paired with fur-collared jackets, and belted stiff wrapped jackets countered the excess of print, color and texture. A slowed-down moody version of David Bowie’s “Heroes,” played as if to say, Van Noten’s girls for fall had a bit of Ziggy Stardust in them, only a more restrained incarnation.

Who Should Wear What To the Oscars: Our Red Carpet Suggestions

Predicting what the nominees will wear to the Oscars is trickier than picking the winners.

There are probably over 100 amazing Oscar-worthy dresses that walk the runway each season, but the reality is that most celebs would rather stick with a safe choice than a fashion forward one. This year, however, the nominees have a better fashion history than most. Nicole Kidman has turned heads in Galliano and Balenciaga, Michelle Williams favors the up-and-coming crowd, and Hailee Steinfeld is not afraid to take a daring risk, be it in Prada or Prabal.

Click through to see what I hope the nominees are wearing this Sunday.

Dries Van Noten Fall 2011 Men’s: Manly Glamor

PARIS–Above the main entrance to the Musée Bourdelle, just past the sumptuous garden courtyard decorated with giants sculptures and the black metal “Hercules The Archer” in the walkway, are the carved inscriptions from
a letter sculptor Antoine Bourdelle had written to his former employer, teacher and colleague Auguste Rodin: “Dans la vie des sculptures un plan superficial est un incident mais un plan profound, constructif est une destinee.” (In the life of sculptor a superficial plan is incidental, but a profound and constructive plan is a destiny.)

A constructive plan. The same could be said of Dries Van Noten’s Fall 2011 menswear show. Heroic! Gallant! New Manly Glamor! were the words used to usher in a new and more fashionable man at Van Noten’s displahy of wool Spencer suits, long coats layered with detachable linings, and embroidered military cadets evening jackets, some dabbed with touches of extra lapels of fur or contrasting fabrics. Subtle design coupled with extensive research into fabrics sourced from all corners of the world has always been Mr. Van Noten’s route to distinguished and wearable clothes.

The show opener–a dark navy wool coat with white cotton lining, crisp white shirt and navy wool pants–led a procession of multi-layered ensembles.
