Watching last night’s award show, we laughed (thank you, Jane Lynch), we cried (Friday Night Light‘s Kyle Chandler tends to do that to us), but most of all we admired the show-stopping creatures that ruled the red carpet. Oh, and the actresses wearing them didn’t look too shabby either.
From Kate Winslet‘s fire-engine red gown (red on the red carpet was kind of a thing last night) to Gwyneth Paltrow‘s midriff-baring top (yes we know, what a show-off), check out our favorite red carpet looks from last night.
The Kates were only the beginning.
Remember when everyone in Hollywood was pregnant? Now, they all seem to be engaged. The most recent starlet to get a ring put on it is the always-stylish Carey Mulligan, whose engagement to Mumford & Sons’ Marcus Mumford was announced yesterday.
A ton of other well-heeled celebs are planning to tie the knot, from Kim Kardashian to Sofia Coppola to Natalie Portman to Zoe Saldana. And since it’s currently wedding season, we thought this would be a good time to speculate on what dresses those celebs might wear down the aisle. Or, at least, what we would like them to wear.

Emma Watson basically can do no wrong with her style choices, as she’s proven time and time again on and off the red carpet.
As if I wasn’t already amped enough for the final Potter film on Friday, Watson’s looks from the premier circuit are making me swoon. She’s already made me want to be a wizard and crop my hair, and now she’s awakened my childhood desire to be a princess with some seriously show-stopping full-skirted strapless gowns. She even looks good in sparkly makeup! The girl has to be magic. My midnight-showing dress-up plans are all going awry; do I stick with the hat and glasses and eyeliner-drawn lightning bolt scar, or try and find my own imitation gilt Bottega Venetta ball gown? Decisions.
Check out Watson’s looks from the red carpet premieres, photocalls and press appearances while she promotes the final Potter installment. Which look is your favorite?
Another couture season is behind us, leaving in its wake more Dior rumors, a rare Alaia show, and lots of strange hair accessories.
It was a gorgeous week for beauty, though. If nails were less-than-spectacular–we’re moving towards a more ladylike manicure, perhaps–the eyes were artful and strong. Lips were mostly neutral with a few notable exceptions. And hair ran the gamut from punky to slick to softly romantic.

These days, couture is often less about the craftsmanship and more about the rush to dress Hollywood’s finest.
But whatever. That’s fine. Especially if it helps boost the bottom lines of these extraordinary ateliers.
We’ll even go as far as to participate in the couture dressing game. Herewith you’ll find our favorite looks from Fall 2011 Haute Couture, and the celebrities we’d like to see wearing them.

Bird’s Jen Mankins Is Cleaning Out Her Closet: Next Wednesday, May 18, the owner of the impossibly cool Brooklyn boutique will do a bit of spring cleaning, to all of our benefit, selling off new and slightly-worn items. This is her second sale–the first featured crazy good deals from lines such as 3.10 Phillip Lim, Rag & Bone, and Isabel Marant. The sale will be at the store’s Cobble Hill location (on the corner of Smith and Butler) and will also feature a 20% off deal on all full-price merchandise. Synchronize your watches, ladies. {Racked}
Anna Dello Russo’s Awkward Dance Video: Bryanboy posted this video of Anna Dello Russo titled “Fashion is Uncomfortable,” where she gets dressed, does impossible stretches, and dances while saying “fashion shower” over and over. Though it probably wasn’t meant to, the short actually does make you very, very uncomfortable. {Bryanboy}
At the opening ceremony for the 64th annual Cannes Film Festival yesterday, stars turned out in high drama floor length finery. Rachel McAdams looked stunning in red and sheer Marchesa, so we forgive her that hat, and Uma Thurman (where has she been lately?) was gorgeous in a slightly altered white hot fall 2011 Versace. Predicting what the nominees will wear to the Oscars is trickier than picking the winners.
There are probably over 100 amazing Oscar-worthy dresses that walk the runway each season, but the reality is that most celebs would rather stick with a safe choice than a fashion forward one. This year, however, the nominees have a better fashion history than most. Nicole Kidman has turned heads in Galliano and Balenciaga, Michelle Williams favors the up-and-coming crowd, and Hailee Steinfeld is not afraid to take a daring risk, be it in Prada or Prabal.
