Erdem Fall 2012: Ladylike With a Latex Edge

Erdem Fall 2012: Ladylike With a Latex Edge

LONDON–London venues this season have either been full of gilt and chintz and huge chandeliers, or large spaces with industrial details. Erdem‘s show, held at a pristine white art gallery on a cool street in London, was a nice change. I got there way too early, and watched several amusing things before the show started: A young reporter with a cameraman in tow worked up her courage to speak to Anna Wintour, did a short interview, then realized the recorder hadn’t been on and had to go back and do it again. To her credit, Anna did the whole thing over again. Then she spent a good 20 minutes whispering to Franca Sozzani. Were they planning to go out for a Guinness after the show? Anyway.

The crisp white gallery space was the perfect backdrop for Erdem’s collection.

The Best of Pre-Fall 2012

While spring and fall seasons may give us more to to ooh and ahh over, pre-collections often present more of what we actually want to wear. It makes sense, since everyone says the in-between seasons are the most important for retailers. And these designers have succeeded in making things we already want to buy, desperately. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until early summer (“pre-fall” is a bit misnomer) to do so. Click through for what we feel were the 10 most drool-worthy collections so far.

Holiday Gift Guide: Designer Gifts You Can Fit Into a Stocking (and Your Budget)

Wanna get someone a fabulous gift that’s designer without breaking the bank? You totally can. In fact, a lot of designer labels cater to people like us who want to be fancy but for whom the Miu Miu shoes and Alaïa dresses we really want are far out of reach.

These aren’t knock-offs or collaborations or makeup, but real designer items that we would actually be very happy to find under the tree or in a stocking. Now if someone could tell us where to put stockings when you don’t have a fireplace, that would be great.

From Prada to Alexander Wang to Alaïa (seriously!), here are the 14 best little designer gifts that less than $300 can buy!

Mangled, Mashed and Mutilated: The Fate of Models’ Feet on the Runway

Mangled, Mashed and Mutilated: The Fate of Models’ Feet on the Runway

Fashion month is a mad whirlwind of collections where we see Anna Wintour literally leap from her seat to continue onto the next show. The jam-packed schedules are cause for a lot of stress for all involved: organizers, editors, buyers, the designers–but especially the models. For models, physical signifiers of work and stress are easily covered on the face with plenty of time in the makeup chair backstage, but there’s one (actually two) key appendages that are sadly over-looked. No, not those. The model’s feet, of course.

With a month of running around four cities, endless nights of fittings, countless show rehearsals and finally–the actual shows–a model’s foot takes one heck of a beating. We’ve already covered the wonderful shoe highlights from this season, but now we will take a look inside the shoe. Warning: If you have foot issues (ie they are too creepy for you to even handle), this slideshow is not for you.

(Updated) Kate and Pippa Middleton Hit Another Wedding this Weekend, Major Papers Disagree About What They Were Wearing

Kate Middleton and sis Pippa got rather posh this weekend for a friend’s wedding in Wiltshire, England. While we like seeing them in their high street ensembles, we really love it when they look completely English in hats and color.

Kate broke out the Erdem again, this time a scarlet lace version. (The DailyMail reports that she wore Collette Dinnigan, though we’re more inclined to believe WWD which reported that it was Erdem.) The shoes are also a point of contention between the two papers–WWD reports LK Bennett, and the Daily Mail thinks they’re Prada. She topped it all off with a jaunty red hat, which is not the same one she wore with that famous red and white Canadian outfit.

London Fashion Week Spring 2012 Beauty Roundup: The Best and the Brightest

London fashion week was a whirlwind of shows, and we had a great time covering them. Besides being an incubator for original fashion, London designers are also not afraid to work a LOOK on their models, making for the best beauty-ogling of all the fashion weeks. From Vivienne Westwood (at left), who is not afraid of, well, anything, to more subtle yet never boring looks, we loved the beauty in London.

This is all about the drama. You need a certain amount of self-confidence to pull many of these off, but we encourage you to try!

Click through for our 10 favorite looks from London.

Erdem Spring 2012: Cool Blue Wallflower Prints

Erdem Spring 2012: Cool Blue Wallflower Prints

Erdem Moralioglu showed his spring collection at the Savoy Hotel, in a ballroom that was painted a soft, barely-there baby blue–a color motif that seemed to inspire a huge portion of the show.

The clothes were covered in muted floral wallpaper prints–a far cry from the bold blooms we saw during NYFW–or bathed in solid pastel shades. It was a far quieter print than we’ve seen from the designer (who has been deemed “The Master of Floral“) in past collections. But don’t let the sedated color palette fool you: This was not a collection for wallflowers.
