Gant by Michael Bastian Fall 2012: A Study in Fashion

Michael Bastian has taken Gant to school.

Over the past two years, since Michael Bastian took over as the designer of Gant by Michael Bastian, and then relaxed into that job, the brand has experienced one of the great turnarounds in menswear. This year, Mr. Bastian did not disappoint with smart, playful college looks. It was a sartorial swap meet between Harvard and Dartmouth, a showcase of prep and cool.

Girls sported high-volume (yet not exactly loud) plaid and printed trousers, fun striped sweaters, sexy, but restrained skirts (ending mid-thigh) and even the occasional cargo. Boys had raffish blazers (a double-breasted check was a particular winner), faded jeans and thick sweaters that were on the right side of goofy.

Gant Fall 2011: Cross Country Ski Gang

Gant Fall 2011: Cross Country Ski Gang

Michael Bastian has said that the inspiration for his F/W 2011 line for Gant was a cross-country ski gang, which is both hilarious and apt. Last season was preppy, naughty lacrosse boys (naughty, but not like Duke Lacrosse naughty)—so how perfect to look at cross country skiers for winter? The collection is a ribald, playful take on winter-wear, cords tucked into unlaced boots, rakish pullovers, cool flannels, puffy coats and thick woolen sweaters abounding.

As for these last items, when discussing the heritage trends, Bastian had told me at the GQ/CFDA Best New Menswear Designer awards (for which he was nominated), “How many snowflake sweaters does a guy need to have?” I guess the answer is, Just a few more. But that’s fine, and fitting with a collection that is as warm and snugly as it is hip and sexy.

Alexander Wang is GQ‘s Best New Menswear Designer in America

On Thursday night, The Ace Hotel got to feel cool when GQ took it over for a party celebrating the nominees of their fourth annual Best New Menswear Designer, which they award in conjuction with the CFDA. The nominees included Kirk Miller (of Miller’s Oath), Patrick Ervell, Riviera Club’s Derek Buse, Joe Sadler and Greg Ullery, Alex Wang for T, Michael Bastian for Gant, and Rick Klotz, the mad genius behind Warriors of Radness.

Alexander Wang was announced the winner this afternoon. He was chosen by a panel that includes Tommy Hilfiger, GQ editor-in-chief Jim Nelson, creative director Jim Moore, and others, and will receive $50,000 and a contract to collaborate with Dockers (last year it was Levi’s, a match made in heaven for Billy Reid, who took home the prize).
