Michelle Obama’s Re-Election Campaign Wardrobe: Meet Her New Favorite Designers

Michelle Obama established herself as a fashion-forward First Lady back in 2008, wearing Michael Kors and Jason Wu with such frequency that nobody could deny they were among her favorites. But now that her hubby is up for reelection, Michelle has introduced us to a whole new batch of faves, many of whom are CFDA honorees and edgy, young wunderkinds.

This year alone, we’ve seen Michelle step out in up-and-coming labels like Preen, Band of Outsiders, Wes Gordon and Lyn Devon–and she’s also been giving love to more established brands like Balenciaga, Peter Som and Sonia Rykiel that were previously absent (or at least very rare) from her wardrobe in past years. But don’t worry – even though MObama’s cool factor has increased like, fivefold this year alone, she’s still maintained loyalties with more classic, well-established labels like Michael Kors, Talbots and J. Crew, who we believe to be responsible for the green and yellow colorblocked number she wore in late June.

Trendspotting: Warm Monochrome Prints

At this point, no one needs to spell out for you that prints were a huge trend last spring, mostly of the colorful, floral variety. But where spring was bright and sunny, fall has taken a turn towards the more staid and sombre, or at least as much as a digital print can be considered Read more →

Helmut Lang Fall 2012: Leather and Bloggers

You either like Helmut Lang or you don’t. And if you’re in the former category (like me), you’re going to like the fall collection a whole bunch.
They’re one of those brands that when you talk about their “brand DNA” an image immediately pops up. From the spare white warehouse space to the flashy strobe light in the beginning, I knew I was at Helmut Lang.

That’s The Ticket: A Look at the Coolest New York Fashion Week Invites
Fashion Is Fun

That’s The Ticket: A Look at the Coolest New York Fashion Week Invites

If you’ve watched Bridezillas, you know it’s difficult to plan a wedding. Every detail is mulled over ad nauseam: the music, decor, seating arrangements, the dress, and, of course, the invitations.

Fashion Week is kind of the same way. Design houses are in a frenzy, burning Lana Del Rey MP3s, obsessing over the set design, sitting in on model castings, making sure the most prominent editors get choice seating, and sending out creative invites to garner excitement (rather than panic attacks) over the several shows they will have to sit through and ultimately, report on.

Just as every bride wants her invitations to capture the essence of her wedding, designers are behooved to get a little creative with their invites. To show you how funky some brands get, we’ve compiled the most interesting invites we’ve received. From embossed flasks to digital picture frames, click through for the fashion show invitations that got us most excited.

The Best of Pre-Fall 2012

The Best of Pre-Fall 2012

While spring and fall seasons may give us more to to ooh and ahh over, pre-collections often present more of what we actually want to wear. It makes sense, since everyone says the in-between seasons are the most important for retailers. And these designers have succeeded in making things we already want to buy, desperately. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until early summer (“pre-fall” is a bit misnomer) to do so. Click through for what we feel were the 10 most drool-worthy collections so far.

Fern Mallis Weighs in On Fashion Week Scheduling Debate, Says Helmut Lang is the Reason New York Shows First

Fern Mallis Weighs in On Fashion Week Scheduling Debate, Says Helmut Lang is the Reason New York Shows First

By now, most of you are probably sick of familiar with New York and Milan’s squabble over Fashion Week dates. While there’s no solution in sight–and both sides seem equally stubborn in their position–former CFDA head and founder of New York fashion week Fern Mallis thinks that eventually a compromise will be found.

The industry big wig told The Wall Street Journal, “If I put my money on it and guess, I think maybe they will get together and move New York up a few days.” And that’s not small talk, considering Mallis is still an important consultant for the industry event.

Helmut Lang Spring 2012: Citrus Surprise

You always know what to expect from Helmut Lang and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Actually, when it comes to Lang’s signature slick, architecturally cut garments–it’s almost always a good thing.

For Spring 2012, husband-and-wife design team Nicole and Michael Colovos, who’ve been at the helm of the label for five years, kept the theme going, with another urban-cool collection. Shown at pier 57 in an industrial warehouse that could certainly use a fresh coat of paint, the parade of monochrome looks only shone brighter set against cement floors and exposed pipes.
