The winner will receive a cash prize and mentorship from an industry veteran. Joseph Altuzarra took home the top prize ($300,000) for 2011, while runners up Pamela Love and Creatures of the Wind got $100,000 each. All three of them got to design a capsule collection for J. Crew. And, it was all documented on a Hulu show.
Now, the following designers will embark on a series of challenges over the next few months, including presenting to a panel of judges, creating a one-of-a-kind piece for Tiffany & Co., and staging a runway show in Los Angeles at the Chateau Marmont. Diane von Furstenberg is one popular lady when it comes to the CFDA: The organization announced today that the designer will continue her reign as their president until at least 2014, WWD is reporting, making this her fourth term as president since her election in 2006 (the elections are held every two years) and the second time the board has extended her tenure. In other words, DVF is doing a kickass job and they want her to keep chugging along.
“Diane has done an excellent job as CFDA president,” Steven Kolb, CFDA chief creative officer, told the trade. “The time and resources she gives and the vision she has created is a huge benefit for our organization and industry.”
The fashion Oscars CFDA awards have wrapped: The Olsens took home the big prize for womenswear for the Row (they very adorably thanked each other); Seth Meyers wore Marc Jacobs’ Met ball outfit (and dared to make a Galliano joke); Garance Dore had folks tearing up when she accepted her award by telling the audience to “take your fun very seriously…[and] maybe one day you will start a revolution”; and John Waters proved the perfect person to pick up awards for both Comme des Garçons‘ Rei Kawakubo (“I wear Comme des Garcons to be fashionable in private…We know how great her clothes look but others just think we’re poor”) and Johnny Depp (“He has fashion balls…he was a pirate Pepe Le Pew way before I met him”). And the industry recognized its finest talents this year.
