Fashionista is excited to host its first ever day-long event, How to Make It in Fashion.

This isn’t just another conference where you leave with a goodie bag and nothing else. (Although there will be a great one.) Along with tips on networking, alternative career paths, and plain old inspiring success stories, you’ll have a chance to actually talk one-on-one with many of our speakers (including Zac Posen, the Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine, Rebecca Minkoff and more) as well as Fashionista editors about how to kick-start your career or take it to the next level. You’ll get real, take-home advice, make connections, and who knows? Maybe you’ll take the first step towards your dream job.

All the deets and how to sign up, right this way.

Kaelen Fall 2013: Sophisticated Grunge

Sometimes in the midst of of all the serious FASHION, it’s nice to see some clothes that are just nice, wearable and cool. As the crowd filtered into the Pier 59 studio space from the Karen Walker runway show next door, you could tell they felt the same way. The models were arranged side-by-side in Read more →

Show Notes: Kaelen Spring 2013
Reviews

Show Notes: Kaelen Spring 2013

The Clothes: Chic and classic with ’80s touches. This was one of those collections with clothes we’d actually want to wear in our day to day life. The color palette was mostly black and white with some pops of pale yellow. A suit covered with an abstract print, a vertically striped midi-lenth dress, a black and white gown and chic lbd were highlights.

The Hair & Makeup: Effortlessly chic, loose ponytails. They all looked like girls who don’t need to spend much time on hair and makeup in order too look amazing.

The Soundtrack: Slow remixed Robyn with lots of bass.

Kaelen Fall 2012: Her Strongest Showing Yet

Kaelen‘s was one of those presentations that instantly put a smile on my face as I walked in. How could the gorgeous jumpsuit + bowtie look at left not make you happy? The print alone was gorgeous–as were all of the prints, which were done by designer Kaelen Haworth‘s stylists. The collection had a ’20s Read more →

Happy Thanksgiving! Designers and Other Fashion Folks Put Their Spin on Paper Hand Turkeys

The holidays are all about nostalgia and one of the things we’ve been nostalgic about lately is hand turkeys! You know, that childhood arts and crafts thing where you trace your hand and make it look like a turkey? To be honest, we aren’t all that crafty anymore, but our fashion friends, like Erica Domesek from P.S. I Made This for example, are like the craftiest people ever, so we asked them to help us out with this little project and they obliged.

Erica helped us assemble hand turkey-making kits, which we then sent out to some of our favorite designers, editors and other fashion peeps who then created some of the most impressive hand turkeys we’ve ever seen (we are super thankful for all of you!!). Click through to see them and find out what these brilliant artists are thankful for this year, and have a very happy Thanksgiving (or just a nice Thursday).

The Fashionista 15: New York Labels To Watch
Fashion Week

The Fashionista 15: New York Labels To Watch

New York Fashion Week has officially begun and as we’ve learned, more designers are showing than ever before. New York seems to breed new talent at an alarming rate compared to other cities. And while that may irritate established designers and make our schedules that much more insane, we love nothing more than being surprised and blown away by a name we’d never heard before.

Still, it can be tough to filter out the real talent from the ones who will fade into the background. All it takes to show a collection is time and money, but to show one that makes us want to see more–that takes something special. So, for the second year in a row, we’ve handpicked 15 relatively under-the-radar designers showing this week who we think are worth paying attention to. Click through to learn about each one and why we think you’ll be seeing a lot more of them for seasons to come.

Designer Kaelen Farncombe Explains How Tornado Chasing Inspired Her Spring Collection (And Why She Decided to Chase Tornados in the First Place)

When we heard that Kaelen designer Kaelen Farncombe’s spring collection was inspired by chasing tornadoes, we had to find out more. Tornado chasing isn’t exactly your standard designer “inspiration trip” fare. But the twisters served as muse to a collection that turned out muted, clean and serene. Was she channeling the calm before the storm?
