The Fashionista 15: New York Labels To Watch

New York Fashion Week has officially begun and as we’ve learned, more designers are showing than ever before. New York seems to breed new talent at an alarming rate compared to other cities. And while that may irritate established designers and make our schedules that much more insane, we love nothing more than being surprised and blown away by a name we’d never heard before.

Still, it can be tough to filter out the real talent from the ones who will fade into the background. All it takes to show a collection is time and money, but to show one that makes us want to see more–that takes something special. So, for the second year in a row, we’ve handpicked 15 relatively under-the-radar designers showing this week who we think are worth paying attention to. Click through to learn about each one and why we think you’ll be seeing a lot more of them for seasons to come.

Seven Questions for Katie Ermilio

Seven Questions for Katie Ermilio

Katie Ermilio is one of our favorite up-and-coming designers. Her clothes are so feminine, elegant and special, but also wearable and versatile. Katie was born into a family of clothiers, but refers to herself as an “accidental designer,” as she grew what she calls a “little hobby passion project” of making made-to-order pieces for private clients into a full-fledged career.

In just a few years she’s gone from a Vogue intern to having her own clothing line and now, at 25, she’s getting ready for her second-ever fashion week presentation (which Andrew Mukamal is styling). Yesterday, we stopped by her model casting to chat about fashion week prep, designing wedding dresses while still in college, and what’s in store for spring 2012.

Katie Ermilio, Misha Nonoo, and Nahm Fall 2011: Girls, Three Different Ways

Katie Ermilio, Misha Nonoo, and Nahm Fall 2011: Girls, Three Different Ways

In the world of fashion, there is a definitely distinction between designers who design for girls, and designers who design for women. In real life, women obviously wear clothes designed for “girls” and vice versa. Yet for some reason when you see a collection, you know if the designer had a girl in mind or a woman. And it doesn’t necessarily have to do with age or price point, but rather an attitude. Francisco Costa, for example, designs for a woman. Anna Sui, a girl. Narciso Rodriguez, a woman. Proenza Schouler, a girl. It’s all about whether or not your garments evoke youth, regardless of who is wearing them.

Despite their differences, the collections of Katie Ermilio, Misha Nonoo, and Nahm all fall into the girl category for us.

First Look: Katie Ermilio Spring 2011

First Look: Katie Ermilio Spring 2011

If we had to wear nothing but Katie Ermilio‘s Spring 2011 collection next year, that would be fine.

Katie was pretty much born into fashion. Her grandmother was Grace Kelly’s personal clothier and her grandfather made iconic jackets for events like Augusta’s master tournament and World War II. While that might be a daunting history to live up to, Katie’s contribution to the family business is definitely worthy of recognition.

The look is understated elegance. Simple cream dresses are the perfect length and boast just enough interesting detail–a sheer overlay or peplum–to keep them from being too simple. And, there are two silk blouses that are more than worthy of our affection.
