Beware The Hypodermic Needles at WalMart: Shoppers at a WalMart in Cartersville, Georgia were surprised with a little treat of the hypodermic needle sort. A 14-year-old girl was stabbed with one while trying on pajamas, and an older woman was pricked when she reached into a bra box. {Gawker}

Trendspotting Spring 2012: Orange Zest

New York has been full of brights the past week, none more obvious than the shades of orange that have already graced at least two dozen collections. From a single pop (Doo.Ri) to a longer stretch (Kimberly Ovitz), it’s about as attention-getting as a color can be.

Kimberly Ovitz Spring 2012: Inspired by a Japanese Architect, Not Lindsay Lohan

Kimberly Ovitz Spring 2012: Inspired by a Japanese Architect, Not Lindsay Lohan

Kimberly Ovitz may be best known outside the fashion world as the woman who designed Lindsay Lohan’s skintight court dress–but within the industry, Ovitz is making a name for herself in beautiful, intellectually-designed clothing.

If her Fall 2011 collection was inspired by Brazil, then this season’s show–full of billowy shapes and ethereal, floaty dresses–was all about Japan. “I was inspired by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, whom I discovered after the Japan disaster happened,” she told us backstage after the show. “I was interested in this idea of disaster vs. relief; nature vs. man.” This dynamic interplay is perfectly conceptualized in the work of Shigeru Ban, who was hired by the Japanese government to create temporary housing.

Ovitz was particularly inspired by Ban’s Curtain House–a work, which, if you haven’t guessed, features white flowing curtains in place of walls, and which certainly seemed to have informed the collection’s flowy, white dresses and pants.

Kimberly Ovitz Fall 2011: Brazilian Visions

She might hail from sunny California, but you wouldn’t know it from scoping out Kimberly Ovitz‘s clothes–the designer’s best known for her dark, interestingly draped jersey dresses. But in addition to the minimalist, monochromatic pieces her fans know and love, Ovitz’s fall collection incorporated hits of neon yellow and bright blue that lent a certain sporty-chic appeal to the looks on display. These pieces were inspired by the architecture and spirit of Brasilia, and it showed in their sculptural silhouettes, innovative cutouts, and eye-popping hues.

Lindsay Lohan’s 6126 Leggings Are Not In Stock In Stores But Her Kimberly Ovitz Court House Dress Sold Out

Lindsay Lohan’s 6126 Leggings Are Not In Stock In Stores But Her Kimberly Ovitz Court House Dress Sold Out

Turns out Lindsay Lohan can move product–just not her own.

When Lohan showed up to court (again) this past Wednesday, this time to plead not guilty to grand theft charges that she stole a $2,500 necklace, she did so in a Kimberly Ovitz skin-tight white mini dress. We never thought we’d be comparing Lindsay Lohan to Michelle Obama, but just as Mrs. O has proven she can move merch (at J.Crew or White House Black Market or H&M), the Kimberly Ovitz “Glavis Albino” dress Lohan wore, which retails for $575, is selling like hot cakes (and is sold out most places).

According to ABC News, the dress has sold out everywhere online, and the NY Post is reporting that Bloomingdale’s and Neiman Marcus have sold out as well. And despite a release we just got from Starworks’ VIP placement trumpeting Amy Adams wearing Kimberly Ovitz, an Ovitz rep told the Post that “Kimberly had no role in Lindsay Lohan wearing the dress.” Starworks told us Amy Adams was their first placement for Ovitz.

Despite the insta-success Lohan has brought Ovitz, she doesn’t seem to have had the same effect with her own line of leggings and apparel.

A Night at Milk Studios: Jen Kao, Mandy Coon, Kimberly Ovitz and LnA

A Night at Milk Studios: Jen Kao, Mandy Coon, Kimberly Ovitz and LnA

Jen Kao
Sure there was sand on the runway and there were floaty dresses and soleless sandals at Jen Kao’s show at Milk yesterday, but there was a dark undercurrent running through her collection. Chris Isaac’s “Wicked Games” played for the entire length of the show, and Kao’s line sheets said that she was “inspired by the arid sands and shifting light of the powdery dunes where desert princes find their zombie brides.” Ok…? The zombie bride thing didn’t exactly come across but Kao’s color palette–sand, off-white, dusty rose–certainly gave off a desert vibe. Models strolled through the sand in over-sized slouchy knits and loose airy dresses, most of which were crocheted and macramed, and paired with soleless macrame thongs and shin guards. The stand out look? A dusty rose gown with intricate paneling at the bodice.
